Civil Service Examination and Literary Life in the Joseon Period

한국의 근대 이전의 ‘문’과 ‘학’은 정치권력과 화해하여 그것을 추동하거나 혹은 정치권력을 비판하면서 새로운 방법과 내용을 모색해 왔다. 정치권력과의 관계를 고려하지 않고 문학의 독자성을 운위하는 것은 실상에 맞지 않는다. 종래 정치권력의 구현에서 가장 중요한 제도가 인재 선발의 방식인 과거와 인력 관리의 방식인 考課ㆍ署經이었다. 이에 문과 학의 발전 양상과 정치권력의 유지 방식을 살피기 위해서는 과거 제도의 본질을 파악할 필요가 있다. 과거에서 부과된 문체나 제목은 당시 국가가 인재에게 요구하는 이념과 논리가 담겨 있다. 고려와 조선의 왕조는 鄕試ㆍ漢城試ㆍ小科ㆍ大科(文科) 등의 科試를 人選ㆍ入仕의 첩경으로 공인함으로써, 應擧文을 習熟한 독서층을 양산했다. 따라서 科試의 應擧文體는 한 시기의 문풍과 학술을 규정하고 제한시켰다고 말할 수 있다. 일부 應擧文體는 중앙 정부에서 소용되는 문체이기도 했지만, 일부 應擧文體는 시험을 위한 수단이기도 했다. 따라서 應擧文體는 시문의 발달에 부정적인 효과를 낳은 면도 있다. 본고는 조선 科試의 科目과 應擧文體, 應擧文 연마에 따른 사유양식과 시문 소양의 형성, 記敍 규범과 서적 편찬 등의 양상을 살펴봄으로써 조선의 과거와 문자생활의 전반에 대해 개관하고자 한다.

In the pre-modern Korea, Wen (文) and Xue (學) constantly have sought for the new methodologies and contents keeping close relationship with the political power. Civil service examination which was the method of selecting human resources, performance review and royal lecture which was the method of managing human resources, was the most important system for realizing the political power. Therefore, it is necessary to grasp the essence of civil service examination system in order to understand the aspects of the development of Wen (文) and Xue (學) and their way of keeping relationship with the political power. The government was suggesting the ideology and the logic required through the styles and titles imposed in the civil service examinations. Goryeo and Joseon government cultivated the literati class well versed with examination poetry and prose by authorizing the civil service examination as a shortcut way to the selection of government official. Thus, it can be said that the dominant literary style of civil service examination that have changed according to the time not only defined the literary style and scholarship of each period, but sometimes even restricted them. In some respect, it also had a negative effect on the development of literature. This paper surveys the subjects and literary styles of civil service examination, the formation of the cultivation of the way of thinking and literary attainments, and the rhetorical rules and publication in the Joseon period.
