  • 3

The aim of this article is to analyze the acceptance of Buddhism in the poetry and prose of Sŏ P'a(西陂) Yu Hŭi(柳僖). Although Yu Hŭi accepted Buddhist thought and wrote Buddhist poetry, his acceptance of Buddhism hasn't been studied. So I want to study on how he understood Buddhism. Yu Hŭi criticized Buddhism on the outside. On the other hand, he kept company with Buddhist monks and he wrote Buddhist poetry. Yu Hŭi accused Buddhism of seducing the public by spreading false reports. Especially, he thought that Buddhism spread false reports about the ups and downs of life. Most of Confucian scholars criticised the cycle of rebirth, often called samsara. Yu Hŭi also criticized the cycle of rebirth, as a Confucian scholar. However, Yu Hŭi didn't analyze Buddhist doctrine closely. In addition he didn't refute Buddhist doctrine in the face. He only denied the cycle of rebirth, superficially. What he criticized is not Buddhist doctrine, but superstitious practices of Buddhist. In short, Yu Hŭi partially accepted Buddhism. One of his pen name is Pang P'yŏncha(方便子), this pen name stemmed from Buddhist term. Also, he wrote Buddhist poetry. He went as far as to rewrite a Buddhist chant. He acknowledged the positive aspect of Buddhist doctrine, at the same time he denied the cycle of rebirth of Buddhism. So he rewrote a Buddhist chant in confucian view. In other hand, Yu Hŭi criticized Buddhism, at the same time he partially accepted Buddhism. To regain authenticity, he accepted Buddhism critically.
