The History of Bronze Vessel research in China - A study of Bronze Vessel from late Qing to early Min

金文學은 청동기를 연구대상으로 삼는 종합적인 성격의 학문으로 주요한 연구범위는 대체로 古器物學과 古文字學으로 나눌 수 있다. 이 중 청동기의 표면에 鑄造되어 있는 銘文의 著錄과 考釋은 전통 금문학의 주류이다. 일찍이 宋代로부터 시작된 본격적인 청동기 연구가 지금과 같은 종합학문으로 자리 잡을 수 있었던 것은 끊임없는 변화와 발전을 거치며 가능했다. 특히 이 중에서도 淸代 末期에서 民國 初期는 금문학의 수준이 전대에 비하여 비약적인 발전을 이룬 시기로써 이후 현재까지의 금문학 성과는 기본적으로 당시의 연구를 바탕으로 이룩됐다고 해도과언이 아니다. 또한 淸代 말기는 金文學이 최고조에 도달한 시기로 民댐 이후의 청동기 연구와도 대단히 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있다. 더욱이 金文學의 경우 그 고려의 대상이 청동기의 銘文을 포함하여 器形과 花紋 등 다방면에 걸쳐있기 때문에 청동기 전반에 걸친 폭넓은 안목과 종합적인 연구 없이는 정확한 성과를 기대하기 힘들다. 따라서 청동기 전체를 연구 대상으로 하는 근대적 개념의 金文學 혹은 靑銅器學의 확립은 淸末民初 시기와 절대적 관련을 맺고 있다.

The study of Bronze Vessel is mainly divided into Archeology and Graphonomy in ancient times. The main stream of Bronze Vessel research is collecting and analyzing letters which cast on the surface of Bronze Vessel. The study of Bronze Vessel started in Song Dynasty and it had begun a science under continuous change and development. The Bronze Vessel research was improved dramatically from late Qing to early Min. Futhermore. it is not too much to say that the recent product of Bronze Vessel research stand on the period basically. The study of Bronze Vessel was at its zenith in the late Qing, and closely related to its study after the Min period. Especially, objects of Bronze Vessel research were various, for example, letters, shape of vessel, patterns and so on. Therefore, the far-reaching insight and comprehensive research is necessary for successful result. Consequently, the establishment of Bronze Vessel research, which is focused on the whole bronze vessel, is definitely connected with the trend from late Qing to early Min period.
