『說文釋例』의 「六書總說」篇에 대한 고찰

小學은 크게 文字學, 聲韻學, 訓詁學으로 나누어 볼 수 있는데, 그 중 하나인 文字學은 甲骨文이 나오기 전까지 說文學이라해도 과언이 아닐만큼 『說文』의 연구는 전대 수많은 학자들의 연구 과제였다. 그 중 淸代 說文 四大家의 업적이 뛰어난데, 桂馥이 『說文解字義證』으로 『說文』의 뜻을 밝혔고, 段玉裁가 『說文解字注』로 形, 音, 義에 따른 종합적 해석을 했으며, 朱駿聲이 『說文通訓定聲』으로 形聲字의 聲符를 정리함으로써 聲符를 통한 어원 硏究 방면에 탁견을 보였고, 王筠은 『說文釋例』로써 『說文』의 體例를 밝혔다고 할 수 있다. 이 중 段玉裁의 『說文解字注』가 『說文』에 관한 가장 권위 있는 著書로 오늘날까지 많은 사람들에 의해 읽혀지고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 『說文解字注』는 『說文』에 대한 注의 형식으로 『說文』의 체계적 학습에 한계를 지니고 있는데, 王筠의 『說文釋例』는 이런 한계를 극복하고, 『說文』에 대한 체계적인 이해의 방법을 제시한 책이다. 즉 『說文釋例』는 六書를 포함한 文字 현상에 대해 체계적이고 구체적인 설명과 함께 『說文』書 자체에 대한 體例를 체계적으로 밝혀 놓고 있는데, 본고에서는 『說文釋例』 중 ｢六書總說｣篇을 통해 六書와 文字에 관한 王筠의 견해를 살펴보았다.

The Shuo-wen-jie-zi(說文解字), compiled by Xu Shen (許愼), in about A.D. 100, is the earliest etymological dictionary. The study of the Shuo-wen-jie-zi, which had discontinued for nearly 800 years after Xu Xuan(許鉉) of Northern Song, enjoyed a remarkable revival during the Qian-long(乾隆) and Jia-qing(嘉慶) periods of the Qing Dynasty. Outstanding among the Qing scholars were Duan Yu-cai(段玉裁), Gui Fu(桂馥), Zhu Jun-sheng(朱駿聲) and Wang Yun(王筠), who were referred as “the four Shuo-wen masters”, Nevertheless, etymological scholars have tended to confine their attention to Duan Yu-cai, whereas the other masters have not been intensively studied. Wang Yun's main works are Shuo-wen shi-li(說文釋例), Wen-zi meng-qiu(文字蒙求) and Shuo-wen-jie-zi ju-dou(說文解字句讀). Among these works, Shuo-wen-shi-li won high acclaim from Qing scholars. It is a successful introductory to the study of the Shuo-wen-jie-zi, even more than Duan's works. In his book Shuo-wen-shi-li, Wang Yun clarified the stylistic rules and lay-out of organization with explanations of the Shuo-wen-jie-zi. At the same time, he also analyzed the rules behind character construction, and tried to find out the nature of Chinese characters, the relationship between Chinese characters, the evolutionary laws of Chinese characters, the characteristic of ancient Chinese characters etc. These are the foundation of the science of Chinese characters. The present thesis consists of Wang Yun's analysis of Liushu(六書), the relationship between Chinese characters and the evolutionary laws of Chinese characters.
