백수린 소설에 나타난 세대 간 균열과 가족 관계의 재구성

Intergenerational cracks and reconstruction of family relationships in Baik Su-lin’s novels

본고의 논의는 백수린 소설을 사례로 들어 혈연을 매개한 친족 중심의 가족 내부에서 당연시되어 온 친밀감의 정서에 의문을 제기한 데서부터 출발했다. 또한 친밀감의 강박과 환상을 강조해 온 가족 이데올로기로부터 탈피를 꾀해, 가족 구성원 간 관계 맺음과 상호 이해, 연대를 주축으로 한 새로운 형태의 가족 공동체를 모색하는 데까지 나아가고자 했다. 그런데 이 지점에서 관건은 백수린이 유독 가족 내부의 세대 간 격차에 주목하는 면모를 보인다는 것이다. 본고는 이러한 내용을 전제로 백수린 소설에서 가족 및 세대의 문제가 한데 얽혀 사회·역사적 담론과 친족·계보적 담론이 상호침투하는 형태를 띠고 있음을 파악하였다. 이에 본론의 각 장에서는 신자유주의 체제 이후 가장의 권위를 잃은 아버지 세대가 가족 내 이방인으로 전락하는 모습(2장), 퇴진한 노년층으로 지칭되는 조부모 세대가 가족 내 소외와 고립을 경험하며 존재론적 의미를 잃어가는 모습(3장), 마지막으로 각기 다른 세대를 살아온 모녀가 개별적 주체로서 서로의 삶에 관심을 두는 관계 맺음의 양상(4장)까지를 순차적으로 확인하였다. 이때 중요한 사실은 백수린이 가족 내 존재하는 세대 차이와 갈등, 균열의 양상을 그리는 데서 그치지 않는다는 것이다. 오히려 그의 소설은 그러한 차이로 말미암아 가족을 ‘혈연에 입각해 마땅히 친밀해야만 하는 관계’로 규정해 온 이데올로기로부터 벗어난다고 보는 편이 적절할 것이다. 이러한 맥락에서 혈연 가족 내부에 존재하는 여러 관계들을 조명하고, 세대를 달리하는 가족 구성원들 간 차이를 확인한 본고의 작업은 궁극에는 혈연을 뛰어넘는 관계 중심의 새로운 형태의 가족을 준비하고 만들어가기 위한 시발점이자, 기존의 가족 이데올로기 전반에 대한 성찰의 일환으로 볼 수 있다.

This paper began by raising questions about the intimacy that normally exists within a family based on blood ties, using Baik Su-lin's novel as an example. In addition, this paper sought to break away from the family ideology that emphasizes intimacy within the family and seek a new form of family community centered on relationships, mutual understanding, and solidarity between family members. However, the key point at this point is that Baik Su-lin shows a particular focus on the gap between generations within the family. Based on this premise, this paper confirmed that issues of family and generation are intertwined in Baik Su-lin's novels, and that social and historical discourses and kinship genealogical discourses are interpenetrated. Therefore, in each chapter of the text, the father's generation, who lost family authority after the neoliberal system, is reduced to strangers within the family (Chapter 2), and the grandparents' generation, referred to as retired seniors, experience alienation and isolation within the family. The process of doing so was confirmed (Chapter 3), and finally, the relationship between mothers and daughters who lived in different generations taking interest in each other's lives as individual subjects (Chapter 4) was sequentially confirmed. What is important here is that Baik Su-lin does not stop at depicting the generational differences, conflicts, and cracks that exist within the family. In this context, the work of this study, which illuminates the various relationships that exist within blood-related families and identifies differences between family members of different generations, is ultimately a starting point for preparing and creating a new form of family centered on relationships that go beyond blood ties. This can be seen as part of reflection on the existing family ideology in general.
