체육 전공 대학생과 비체육 전공 대학생의 쓰기 능숙도 비교 연구 - 어휘 다양성 및 통사적 복잡성을 중심으로

A Study on Vocabulary Diversity and Syntactic Complexity in the Writing of Physical Education Major Students

본 연구는 체육 전공자의 언어 사용 능력에 대해 우리 사회가 가지는 부정적인 인식이 실제로 존재하는 것인지 확인하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 40명의 체육 전공 대학생(이하, 체대생)과 40명의 비체육 전공 대학생(이하, 비체대생)의 논설문을 수집하여 두 집단의 작문이 어휘 다양성과 통사적 복잡성에서 차이를 가지는지 분석하였다. 어휘 다양성은 작문에 나타난 어휘의 출현 빈도, 유형 빈도 및 유형-출현 빈도를 중심으로 분석하였으며, 통사적 다양성은 한 문장당 어절 수, 한 문장당 형태소 수, 한 문장당 등위절 수, 한 문장당 부가절 수, 한 문장당 관계절 수, 한 문장당 동사 수, 한 문장당 조사 수, 총 문장 수를 기준으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과 체대생과 비체대생의 작문은 어휘 다양성과 통사적 복잡성에서 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 이와 같은 결과는 체육 전공자의 언어 사용 능력에 대한 우리 사회의 부정적인 인식이 타당하지 않으며, 정당한 근거가 없는 편견임을 시사한다. 아울러 특정 집단에 대한 부당한 편견을 해소할 수 있는 방안에 대한 모색이 필요함을 제안한다.

This study aims to propose This study aimed to verify whether the negative perception of physical education (PE) majors' language proficiency, prevalent in our society, holds any validity. To this end, argumentative essays were collected from 40 PE majors (henceforth referred to as PE students) and 40 non-PE majors (henceforth referred to as non-PE students). The essays were analyzed to determine whether there were differences between the two groups in terms of lexical diversity and syntactic complexity. Lexical diversity was assessed based on the token frequency of words, type frequency, and type-token ratios (TTR). Syntactic complexity was measured by the number of phrases per sentence, morphemes per sentence, coordinate clauses per sentence, subordinate clauses per sentence, relative clauses per sentence, verbs per sentence, postpositions per sentence, and the total number of sentences. The results showed no statistically significant differences between the writings of PE and non-PE students in terms of lexical diversity and syntactic complexity. These findings suggest that the negative perception of PE majors' language proficiency in our society may not be substantiated by legitimate grounds. Furthermore, this study proposes the need to explore ways to eliminate undue prejudice against specific groups.
