크세노폰의 『키로파에디아』에 나타난 교육의 과정과 인문적 리더십

A Study on the Educational Process and Humanistic Leadership in Xenophon’s Cyropaedia

이 연구의 목적은 고대 그리스에서 철학자이자 장군으로 알려진 크세노폰(Xenophon)이 저술한 『키로파에디아』(Cyropaedia)에 묘사된 고대 페르시아 키루스(Cyrus) 대왕의 세 가지 교육의 과정을 소개하고, 크세노폰의 『키로파에디아』저작에 나타난 몇 가지 의미 있는 리더십을 탐구하는 것이다. 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 페르시아의 기본적인 학교교육, 메디아의 특수교육, 부모의 비공식교육 등 세 가지 유형의 교육이 키루스의 인문학적 리더십(humanistic leadership)이나 성격 형성에 상당한 영향을 미쳤음을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 여러 유형의 교육을 통해 길러진 동행, 솔선수범, 관용, 배려, 설득, 자제, 공평 등의 중요한 인문학적 리더십은 정복전쟁을 승리로 이끄는 원동력인 동시에 대제국을 수립하고 관리하는 데에도 상당히 큰 영향을 끼친 것으로 이해된다. 이러한 리더십은 전통적이고 시대에 뒤떨어진 것처럼 보일 수 있지만 이러한 리더십은 시간과 공간을 뛰어넘는 보편적 가치를 가지는 중요한 자질이요 역량으로 인식될 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 이런 의미에서 오늘날에도 『키로파에디아』에 나타난 키루스의 인문학적 리더십은 끊임없이 새롭게 재해석되어야 할 것으로 보인다.

The aim of this study is to introduce three educational processes of Great King Cyrus of ancient Persia in the work Cyropaedia written by Xenophon known as philosopher and general in ancient Greece and to investigate some meaningful leaderships described in the work Cyropaedia of Xenophon. Conclusions are as followings: Firstly, it was found that the three types of education such as basic school education, median special education, and parent’s informal education influenced considerably to formation of humanistic leadership or character. Secondly, it was learned that important humanistic leaderships such as companion, modeling, tolerance, caring, persuasion, self-control, and impartiality came into victory of conquest war and furthermore influenced to establishment and management of great empire. We may think those leaderships are traditional and outdated and should be discarded, but those leaderships will be recognized as important capacity or competence with universal value. In this sense, humanistic leaderships in Cyropaedia will be reinterpreted newly even today.
