Examining Online Tool Usage in Korean Language Learners’ Writing

The recent advancement of technology has spurred a growing interest in integrating online tools into foreign language instruction. This study investigates the range of available online tools utilized by Korean language learners for writing tasks and explores how these tools are incorporated into their writing processes. The researchers first conducted a quantitative survey with 74 intermediate-level Korean language learners to identify their preferred online tools for writing. Then, 10 students were invited to participate in three writing tasks, including description, information provision, and email composition. During these tasks, the researchers observed their writing processes through screen sharing. Following the tasks, participants engaged in an interview to recall their writing processes. The results of the study found that students used different tools for different purposes and leveraged various strategies when implementing these tools to complete the writing tasks. Additionally, the study revealed that students are not yet actively using generative AI tools for various reasons. This study explored various online tools used by Korean language learners and examined their integration strategies, providing insights for developing targeted support to enhance effective online tool use in writing tasks.
