15금 BL웹툰 <팔재>는 동양풍 판타지라는 드문 소재를 채택해 성공을 거두었다. <팔재>의 스토리텔링 전략은 탐색과 반추의 다층적 서사를 통한 향유자 참여, 캐릭터 관계의 가변성을 활용한 내력담 확충, 판타지와 어우러지는 동양화풍 작화의 탐미성 극대화 세 가지를 꼽을 수 있다. 첫째, 익숙한 고전 서사를 현대적으로 재해석, 변형시켜 두 캐릭터의 과거를 중첩시킴으로써 보다 복잡한 다층적 서사를 구축해 향유자들의 호기심을 불러일으키고, 향유자 스스로 탐색하고 반추하는 참여문화를 형성했다. 둘째, 시공간에 따라 변하는 캐릭터 관계를 통해 행위의 인과성과 사건의 개연성을 부여해 서사성을 강화하고 내력담을 차별화했다. 셋째, 수묵화 스타일, 중간톤의 사실적이면서 투명한 작화, 신 단위의 역동성 강화 등의 작화스타일로 미적 성취를 이루었다. 이처럼 <팔재>는 성애 요소를 약화시키고, 판타지와 내력담을 기반으로 서사성을 강화하고, 탐미적 작화 스타일로 고유의 미학을 성취하였다. 15금 BL웹툰은 순정만화와 19금 BL웹툰 사이에서 독립된 시장을 형성해왔다. <팔재>의 성과는 BL웹툰 시장의 다양성 측면뿐만 아니라 15금 BL웹툰의 독자적인 위상을 제고한다는 측면에서 의미가 있다.

The 15-rated BL webtoon <Paljae, Child of Winter> succeeds by adopting an unusual material of oriental fantasy. The storytelling strategy of <Paljae, Child of Winter> is threefold: engaging the viewer through a multi-layered narrative of exploration and reflection, expanding the backstory by using the variability of character relationships, and maximizing the tastiness of the oriental painting style that blends with fantasy. First, by reinterpreting and transforming the familiar classic narrative in a modern way and superimposing the pasts of the two characters, the creator built a more complex, multi-layered narrative that aroused the curiosity of the enjoyers and created a participatory culture that they explored and reflected on. At the same time, character relationships that change over time and space give the causality of actions and the probability of events, enriching the narrative and setting backstories apart. Finally, <Paljae, Child of Winter> achieved aesthetic fulfillment with ink painting style artwork, realistic and transparent artwork with medium tones, and long, dynamic artwork per scene. In this way, <Paljae> has achieved its own unique aesthetic, by weakening the sexualized elements, building up the narrative with fantasy and backstory, and painting it in a more aesthetic way. The 15-rated BL webtoons have formed an independent market between girls’ cartoons and 19-rated BL webtoons. The achievement of <Paljae, Child of Winter> is significant not only in terms of diversifying the BL webtoon market, but also in terms of raising the unique status of 15-rated BL webtoons.
