Development and Validation of a Reading Motivation Scale for Korean EFL Middle School Students

In consideration of the educational and cultural differences between English speaking countries and Korea, a new motivational scale has been developed, taking into account intrinsic, extrinsic as well as amotivation factors. Literature review, analysis of previous studies, experts' review, and exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were part of the research process. Finally, the reliability and validity of the scale were validated using a survey of 880 middle school students. Results of the study demonstrated high internal consistency and convergent and discriminant validity of the scale. Accordingly, the scale will be useful for assessing English reading motivation and designing educational interventions for Korean middle school students. A limitation of the study is the regional distribution of the sample. Future studies should explore the generalizability of the scale to a broader range of populations.
