무협 웹소설 『화산귀환』의 서술 전략 연구 - 무협 장르의 학습과 신규 독자 확보를 중심으로

A Study on the Narrative Strategy of the Muhyeop Webnovel Return of the Blossoming Blade : Focusing on Learning the Muhyeop Genre and Acquiring New Readers

2010년대 후반 한국 무협 소설은 기존 장르적 관습에 익숙한 독자층이 감소하고 신규 독자가 유입되지 못하면서, 이로 인한 창작･소비의 축소가 다시 독자층의 감소로 이어지는 악순환에 빠져 있었다. 이때 2019년 연재를 시작한 웹소설 『화산귀환』은 무협 소설에 익숙하지 않은 새로운 독자층을 확보함과 동시에 이들을 무협이라는 장르의 독자로서 재생산시키며 흥행에 성공했다. 본고는 장르의 학습과 독자의 재생산이라는 측면을 이해하고자 『화산귀환』 초반부의 서술 전략을 대상으로 삼아 텍스트 분석을 진행하였다. 그 결과 작품이 신규 독자층에게 무협이라는 장르를 학습시키고 ‘협(俠)’을 장르의 핵심 개념으로 내세우는 과정을 상당 부분 밝혀낼 수 있었다. 『화산귀환』은 전체적으로 무협 자체는 생소하나 웹소설 문법에는 익숙한 독자층에게 무협의 세계를 학습시키는 것을 목표로 서술 전략을 세웠으며, 그 세부 사항은 다음과 같이 이야기할 수 있다. 첫째, 『화산귀환』은 서술 방식 측면에서 웹소설에서 대중적인 관습으로 통용되는 ‘빙의･환생’이라는 코드를 차용하여 신규 독자에게 무협(武俠)의 장르적 관습을 설명하는 당위로 삼았다. 둘째, 『화산귀환』은 작품 구성 측면에서 백과사전식 구조화를 통해 무협 세계를 구축하고, 이를 통해 무협의 기치와 그 체계를 독자가 차근차근 납득할 수 있게 만들었다. 셋째, 『화산귀환』은 이상의 서술 전략을 통해 무협의 핵심 가치인 협(俠)을 독자가 수용토록 유도했다. 이상의 과정은 독자가 무협을 학습함과 동시에 『화산귀환』에 몰입할 수 있게 하였다.

In the late 2010s, the muhyeop genre faced a vicious cycle where the existing reader base familiar with genre conventions was declining, and new readers were not being brought in, leading to a contraction in creation and consumption, which in turn further diminished the reader base. At this time, the webnovel Return of the Blossoming Blade which began serialization in 2019, succeeded in attracting a new reader base unfamiliar with muhyeop novels while simultaneously reproducing them as readers of the muhyeop genre, achieving great popularity. This study aims to understand the aspects of learning the genre and reproducing readers by analyzing the narrative strategies employed in the early parts of Return of the Blossoming Blade. As a result, it was largely revealed how the work taught the muhyeop genre to new readers and presented ‘hyeop(俠)’ as the core concept of the genre. Overall, Return of the Blossoming Blade aimed to teach the world of muhyeop to readers familiar with webnovel conventions but unfamiliar with muhyeop itself, establishing narrative strategies accordingly. Firstly, in terms of narrative method, it borrowed the popular webnovel trope of ‘reincarnation/possession’ to provide a rationale for explaining the genre conventions of muhyeop(武俠) to new readers. Secondly, in terms of work structure, it constructed the muhyeop world through an encyclopedic organization, allowing readers to gradually understand the principles and systems of muhyeop. Thirdly, through the aforementioned narrative strategies, it guided readers to accept the core value of muhyeop, ‘hyeop(俠).’ This process enabled readers to simultaneously learn muhyeop and become immersed in Return of the Blossoming Blade.
