Trends in Career Research for University Students Majoring in Hotel and Tourism Management

Purpose - This study aims to analyze the career-related variables of university students majoring in hotel and tourism, and to propose future research prospects and tasks. Design/Methodology/Approach - To this end, 25 papers related to the careers of hotel and tourism major students, published in domestic academic journals indexed by KCI from 2013 to 2023, were extracted and analyzed based on general trends in career research, research topics, research methods, and research variables. Findings - The results of the study are as follows. First, the number of studies sharply increased to 13 in 2020. Second, in terms of research topics, studies related to 'psychological and emotional factors' concerning careers were the most prevalent, with an increase in topics related to 'career planning factors’, 'career decision factors’, and 'educational environment factors’. Third, regarding research subjects, 16 papers targeted university students majoring in hotel and tourism, seven papers focused on students majoring in aviation services, two were related to field training and internship students, one targeted faculty members, and one focused on employment practitioners. Research Implications - In future studies, it is necessary to identify trends in employment-related research based on career-related variables such as career decision level, career choice, and career preparation behavior to determine how they are linked to employment, and to identify global trends in career-related research for university students majoring in hotel and tourism by comparing qualitative research on career-related variables with trends in foreign studies.
