다원예술 개념에 관한 탐색적 연구 - 한국문화예술위원회 다원예술지원사업을 중심으로

An Exploratory Analysis of the concept of Combined Arts in Korea

이 연구는 다원예술 개념의 모호성을 해결하기 위해 예술가들의 다원예술 정의를 토대로 동시대 한국의 다원예술 개념을 탐색적으로 분석한 논문이다. 다원예술은 장르적 정체성이 뚜렷하지 않아 예술 현장에서 다양한 의미로 혼용되고 있으며, 관련 예술지원사업을 운영하는 데 있어 혼란이 많이 제기되고 있다. 한국문화예술위원회에서 2021년 운영한 <2021 다원예술 활동지원 Reboot>에 접수된 사업신청서 중 100개를 무작위로 추출해 예술가들이 서술한 다원예술 정의에 관한 텍스트를 자료로 활용하였다. 분석 결과 예술가들이 인식하는 다원예술 개념은 ‘장르적 무관심’, ‘실험과 전복’, ‘다매체성’, ‘동시대적 가치’, ‘평등하고 공정한 감각’의 5개 대범주로 도출되었다. 기존 장르가 특정 예술 언어 및 표현을 기반으로 미적 가치를 창출하고 전통적 담론을 유지하려고 한 것에 비해, 다원예술은 실험적이고 혁신적인 장르를 넘나드는 시도를 통해 동시대적 가치를 발산하고 담론을 확장하였다. 다원예술은 예술가의 정체성에 기반한 새로운 예술 세계 구축을 궁극적 목표로 한다는 점에서 기존 예술 장르와 결과적으로는 같은 지향을 가지지만, 그 과정에서 수용, 협력, 연결, 평등 등 탈위계적인 관점과 태도를 중시한다는 점에서 예술적 특성 외에 제도적 맥락에서 다원예술이 가진 특이성을 이해하는 점이 중요하다고 지적하였다. 분석 내용을 종합해 보면 다원예술은 하나의 장르가 아니라 실험적 시도에 근간한 새로운 형태의 예술 활동을 폭넓게 정의하는 개념이다. 그러므로 관련 예술지원사업을 운영할 때에도 장르적 경계 및 특성에 집중하기 보다 다원예술의 가치와 영향력을 중심으로 사업을 운영하는 것이 필요하다.

This study is an exploratory analysis of the concept of combined arts in contemporary Korea based on the definition of combined arts by artists, focusing on the ambiguity of the concept of multiple arts. 100 business applications submitted to the “2021 Combined Arts REBOOT Activity Support Project” operated by the Korea Culture and Arts Commission in 2021 were randomly extracted and the definition of multiple arts described by artists was analyzed according to the grounded theory methodology. As a result of the analysis, the concept of combined arts recognized by artists was derived into five major categories: “genre indifference,” “experiment and subversion,” “multimedia,” “simultaneous values,” and “equal and fair sense.” While existing genres tried to create aesthetic values based on specific artistic languages and expressions and maintain traditional discourse, combined arts radiated contemporary values and expanded discourse through attempts to cross experimental and innovative genres. It was pointed out that combined arts have the same direction as existing art genres in that they ultimately aim to build a new art world based on the artist's identity, but in the process, it is important to understand the specificity of combined arts in an institutional context in addition to the characteristics of the art genre in that they value post-order perspectives and attitudes such as acceptance, cooperation, connection, and equality.
