T. S. 엘리엇과 에밀리 헤일: 초기시의 꽃과 소녀 새롭게 읽기

T. S. Eliot and Emily Hale: Re-readings of Flowers and Girls in His Early Poetry

본고는 프린스턴대학교에 봉인되어 있다가 2020년에 공개된, 헤일에게 보낸 엘리엇의 서한문이 T. S. 엘리엇 연구에 활력을 불어넣으리라는 기대에서 출발한다. 본 연구는 에밀리 헤일과 느슨하게 혹은 밀접하게 관련된 꽃과 소녀라는 소재에 초점을 맞춰 엘리엇의 초기시를 재평가하고자 한다. 본고의 전반부는 1907년 『하버드 지지자』에 실린 ｢노래｣와 엘리엇 생전에 출판되지 않은 ｢부활절: 사월의 감각｣, ｢확신(서막)｣, ｢억눌린 콤플렉스｣를 다룬다. 후반부에서는 엘리엇의 대표 시집인 『프루프록과 다른 관찰들』(1917)에서 상대적으로 주목을 덜 받은 ｢울고 있는 소녀｣와 『황무지』(1922)의 히아신스 정원 장면을 재해석한다. 엘리엇-헤일 편지에서 발견된 그의 삶과 예술에 대한 새로운 사실, 즉 그들이 처음 만난 시기, 자신의 감정에 대한 솔직한 고백, 히아신스 시행에 대한 그의 진솔한 설명을 바탕으로 본고는 “보이지 않는” 시인과 “몰개성적인” 시의 다른 차원을 탐색한다. 이러한 시도가 엘리엇의 작품을 새롭게 읽기 위한 궁극적인 방법은 아니지만, 시인과 그의 작품 간의 복합적인 관계에 관한 후속 연구와 사유에 기여할 것이다.

Starting with an expectation that Eliot’s letters to Hale that were unsealed and made publicly available from 2020 at Princeton University will significantly revitalize T. S. Eliot scholarship, this study attempts to reevaluate Eliot’s early poems focusing on the subject matter of flowers and girls, which are remotely or closely related to Emily Hale. The first half of this paper deals with “Song,” which appeared in Harvard Advocate in 1907, as well as “Easter: Sensations of April,” “Convictions (Curtain Raiser),” and “Suppressed Complex,” which were not published during Eliot’s lifetime. The second half reconsiders “La Figlia Che Piange,” which was relatively neglected in his canonical volume, Prufrock and Other Observations (1917), and the hyacinth garden scene in The Waste Land (1922). Based on new findings about his life and art from the Eliot-Hale letters, for instance, the year of their first meeting to 1905 rather than 1912, his candid confession of his feelings, and his personal revelation regarding the hyacinth lines, this paper explores other dimensions of the “invisible” poet and his “impersonal” poems. This alternative reading is not intended as the ultimate analysis for the purpose of interpreting his work anew, but will contribute to future research and thinking on the intertwined relationship between the poet and his work.
