엘리엇의 ｢사자의 매장｣ 읽기 : 기독교적 시각으로

Reading Eliot’s ‘The Burial of the Dead’ Mainly from the Perspective of Christianity

사실 엘리엇의 시인으로서의 명성은 『황무지』의 출판으로 확고해졌다. 그럼에도 불구하고 출판 초기에는 이 작품에 대한 평가는 양분되었다. 다만 『황무지』는 엘리엇의 기독교성을 내포하고 있다는 사실에는 대부분의 평자들의 일관된 견해이다. 그래서 이글에서는 『황무지』 전체 중에서 제1부인 ｢사자의 매장｣에 국한하여 기독교적 특성을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 일부에서는 엘리엇이 직접 밝힌 바와 같이 성경의 내용이 인용되었음이 드러나기도 하지만 대부분에서는 직접적으로 드러나지 않는 측면이 있었다. 다만 기독교 성경에 등장하는 내용으로 ｢사자의 매장｣을 감상할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그 대표적인 예로 부활절이 속한 4월이나 목적의식을 상실한 황무지 속 인간들과 점술 행위에 의존하는 인간 및 실제 런던의 9시 상황 등으로 나타나고 있다.

Eliot’s poetic reputation was solidified through The Waste Land. Nonetheless, the various evaluations about that poem existed in the early days. Many researchers did not show the same opinions about The Waste Land. But what is common is that the poem is largely Christian. This paper focuses on “The Burial of the Dead” of The Waste Land, focusing on Christianity. “The Burial of the Dead” also includes Christianity consistently from the first to the last although that poem expresses it clearly. Eliot expresses April as the cruellest month of the year. We celebrate Easter in April, commemorating the rebirth of Jesus Christ. In spite of all, human forgets it and lives purposelessly without a distinctive aim. Modern man lives physically but dies spiritually, that is, “death-in-life.” Death in Life. Eliot employs many Biblical allusions in ‘The Burial of the Dead’ to show the spiritual instability of our human beings.
