탈(脫)경계적 공간에서의 소통 양상의 변화: 기술의 진보에 따른 새로운 언어접촉 양상

Changes in Communication Aspects in Trans-boundary Spaces: New Patterns of Language Contact due to Technological Advancements

본 연구의 목적은 소통에 영향을 미치는 하나의 변수로서 공간이 내포하는 문제에 주목하여 그 영향과 한계를 살펴보는 것이다. 최근 기술적 진보에 따라 현대 사회는 소통에 있어서 물리적 공간과 거리 변수가 점차 사라지는 탈경계적 소통을 경험하고 있는데, 이는 언어접촉에 있어서 여러 새로운 양태를 만들어 내고 있다. 탈경계 공간에서 나타나는 원격현전과 탈신체화는 양날의 검과 같이 언어접촉의 편의성 증가라는 긍정적인 측면과 함께, 거짓, 오류, 왜곡 등이 발생할 부정적인 측면을 동시에 내포하고 있다. 탈경계 공간에서의 언어접촉은 최근의 언어 변화를 이끄는 주요 원인으로서 주목할 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서는 이와 관련하여 탈경계적 공간의 개념 및 탈경계 공간에서 형성되는 언어접촉과 재영역화의 문제, AI가 기계 번역에 활용되는 과정에서 나타날 수 있는, 중심축 언어로서의 영어가 내포하는 언어 권력의 문제에 대해서 분석했다. 현 발전 방향에서 볼 때, 언어 권력과 문화 권력이 미약한 중소규모 언어들은 인공지능 기술 중심의 세계적 변화 과정에서 더 큰 언어권에 의해서 소외될 가능성이 큰 것으로 보인다. 현재의 인공지능이 극한의 효율성을 추구하고 있고, 언어가 그 효율성의 대상이 될 때, 사용 빈도가 낮은 언어는 이러한 현상에 취약하여 더 사용 빈도가 높은 언어로 흡수될 가능성이 크기 때문이다.

This study aims to focus on the problems posed by space as a variable that affects communication and examine its impact and limitations. With recent technological advancements, modern society is experiencing borderless communication in which physical space and distance variables are gradually disappearing, creating several new forms of language contact. Telepresence and disembodiment, which appear in borderless spaces, are like double-edged swords; they have the positive side of increasing the convenience of language contact and the negative side of creating lies, errors, and distortions. Language contact in new spaces is a significant cause of recent language changes and needs to be noted as a critical issue. This study examines the concept of transboundary space, the problems of language contact and reterritorialization formed in transboundary space, and analyses the issue of the power of English as a central language that may appear in the process of using AI for machine translation. Small and medium-sized languages with weak linguistic and cultural power will likely be marginalized by larger language circles in global change centered on artificial intelligence technology. This is because current artificial intelligence is pursuing extreme efficiency, and when language becomes the target of that efficiency, less frequently used languages are vulnerable to this phenomenon and are likely to be absorbed into more frequently used languages.
