Comparative Analysis Between Generative AI Translation and Korean English learners’ Translation: Focusing on Literary Works and Popular Culture Content.

The current study conducted a qualitative analysis comparing translations by generative AI and Korean English learners to determine which is superior and in what ways generative AI might surpass human translations. A total of 12 participants presented their translations alongside machine or generative AI translations. The study focused on comparing translations from ChatGPT, a leading example of generative AI perceived to have overcome the limitations of traditional machine translation, with those of Korean English learners. The results showed that while translations of both literary works and popular culture content were compared, neither generative AI nor human translations proved to be unequivocally superior. An impressive aspect of this study was the observation that, compared to the past, generative AI has significantly improved its ability to convey the author’s intent and the emotional nuances often considered a uniquely human domain. As a result, in some instances, the translations by ChatGPT, a generative AI, were deemed superior, with participants acknowledging that it sometimes produced translations that they had not considered, surpassing their own efforts. This led to the conclusion that, over time, generative AI translation capabilities could match or even exceed those of human translators.
