Exploring Effective Memorization Techniques of Arabic for Korean students

This study discusses the effectiveness of some methods used in memorizing foreign vocabulary by applying them to Arabic language learners studying at a Korean university. The focus was on two methods, one focusing on the listening skill through songs, and the other is focusing on writing and reading by making vocabulary lists in a method called the “Gold List”. Using a procedural research, students' performance in memorizing Arabic words using these two methods was monitored. The number of words that students were able to memorize in both methods was examined through electronic tests. The results of the students’ tests on the memorized vocabulary reflected greater effectiveness of the memorization method by listening to songs. This finding was confirmed through students’ responses to questionnaires and interviews, which highlighted some negative aspects of the Gold List method that decreased students’ interest in applying this method. The study identified some reasons for these outcomes and provided recommendations to improve the skills for memorizing Arabic words.
