This study sought to identify and classify the distinctive features of ddeoljam, a type of short hairpin adorned with fluttering ornaments, from the Joseon Dynasty. It aimed to reinterpret these characteristics from a modern viewpoint and explore their potential applications in nail jewelry-making. To facilitate creative exploration, the study utilized 7 checkpoints from the SCAMPER techniques. Subsequently, designs were created using Adobe Photoshop 2022, resulting in the creation of four distinct works. Utilizing the fundamental shapes of ddeoljam, two plates of varying sizes were initially prepared. Employing a dual structure approach, ornamental elements were removed and subsequently reconfigured. The titles of the works were chosen in pure Korean. ‘Somsomi’, which literally translates to ‘delicate’, was fashioned in a bundle form by intricately attaching ddeolsae (bird-shaped silver ornament). In ‘Grinnarae’, meaning ‘picturesque wings’, an attempt was made to express butterfly wings in a stunning manner. ‘Daboksol’, signifying ‘a young fine tree with spread branches’, portrayed ddeolsae in an enticing branch-like form. In ‘Kkotsungeori’, representing ‘a bunch of flowers’, it was expressed in the form of a bouquet of flowers. However, despite examining nail jewelry design, this study fell short in capturing the vibrant colors of ddeoljam, indicating the need for further research in this area. It is anticipated that the findings of this study will serve as fundamental data for the development of the nail industry and as a means to boost sales.
