Effects of Nursing Leadership Development Class Operation for Nursing Students

DOI : 10.34089/jknr.2024.8.3.91

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of nursing leadership development classes using action learning for nursing students. Methods : This action learning application class was a one-group pre-post test design to verify the effects on nursing students' interpersonal skills, change self-efficacy, creative self-efficacy, and nursing leadership. This class was based on Kouzes and Posner's transformational leadership theory and consists of five principles for successful leaders as a sub-area of nursing leadership development. In addition, it was designed to be operated for 1 credit by applying the action learning model and Christopher Hill leadership training technique. Results : Nursing leadership increased statistically significantly before and after the nursing leadership development class using action learning, but interpersonal skills, change self-efficacy, and creative self-efficacy did not. Conclusion : Nursing leadership development is a class that defines nursing leadership as necessary for general nurses who care for patients. Although limited, the operational effectiveness was confirmed and basic data was provided to enable it to be operated as a subject in nursing education. Therefore, the nursing leadership in this study avoids the traditional nurse manager-centered nursing leadership, it is significant that it focuses on the nursing leadership that general nurses who care for patients must have along with the recognition that they are nursing leaders.
