Objectives: This study aims to enhance the understanding and skills of dental hygienists and professionals in treating patients with various disabilities. It focuses on improving communication with disabled children and their guardians, ensuring better oral health outcomes, and enhancing the overall quality of life for individuals with disabilities. Methods: A comprehensive review of current literature, clinical practices, and guidelines was conducted. Disabilities were categorized into physical, sensory, and intellectual types, with conditions like cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, spina bifida, and muscular dystrophy specifically addressed. The study examined the role of dental hygienists in managing these patients, emphasizing communication strategies, behavioral management, and customized dental care approaches. Results: Key findings indicate that specialized knowledge of each disability type is crucial for providing effective dental care. Individualized treatment plans, effective communication with patients and caregivers, and adaptive tools are essential for overcoming the challenges faced by dental professionals. The study highlights the importance of continuous professional development in managing the oral health of patients with severe physical or intellectual disabilities. Conclusions: To provide high-quality dental care to patients with disabilities, dental professionals must possess specialized knowledge and skills tailored to each disability type. Effective communication and individualized treatment are key to improving oral health and quality of life for disabled patients. Continuous education and adaptation in clinical practices are necessary to meet the unique needs of this vulnerable population.
