Reflection on the potential of EdTech for school English education: Focusing on AI chatbots and metaverses

This study investigates the integration of advanced educational technologies, specifically artificial intelligence (AI) and the metaverse, into English language curricula to address the evolving demands of a knowledge-based society. By reviewing relevant literature, the study evaluates the feasibility and effectiveness of these technologies in enhancing school-based English instruction. The findings indicate that AI chatbots can significantly improve English communication opportunities, alleviate emotional burdens, stimulate learner interest, offer personalized learning experiences, and support autonomous learning by overcoming constraints related to time and location. Additionally, the study examines the metaverse’s potential for learnercentered English instruction, highlighting its ability to provide authentic scenarios and interactive contexts that foster deeper engagement and meaningful learning experiences for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Although the metaverse offers valuable tools through diverse social activities and immersive environments, the primary emphasis remains on AI’s transformative impact on English education. This research emphasizes that integrating AI and the metaverse can enhance English instruction, making it more effective and responsive to learners' needs in the contemporary educational landscape. By focusing on these technologies, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of their potential benefits and applications in modern English education.
