한·베 자막번역에 나타나는 문화소 번역 전략 연구 - 영화 <기생충>을 중심으로

A Study on Translation Strategies for Cultural Elements in Korean-Vietnamese Subtitling

본 연구의 목적은 한·베 자막 번역에서 나타나는 문화소를 적절하게 번역하기 위함이다. 영화 <기생충>은 현대 사회의 빈부격차를 다룬 내용으로 베트남 시청자들에게 공감을 얻었던 영화이다. 영화 내에 나타나는 문화소를 번역할 때, 베트남의 문화를 이해하지 않고 번역한다면, 베트남 시청자들로부터 시청에 이질감이 들 수 있다. 또한, 한·베 번역 전략 연구는 다른 중국, 일본 영미권 등과 비교했을 때 미비한 수준이다. 본고는 문화소를 고유명사, 특정 문화와 관련된 어휘, 특정 사건이나 인물과 관련된 어휘, 관용어 4가지로 나누어 총 71개의 문화소를 추출 후, 범주별 대표적인 번역 실례를 통해 번역 전략을 분석하였다. 한국과 베트남은 유교 문화권이라는 공통점에 근거하여 문화적으로 대체할 수 있는 부분도 일반 표현으로 대체되는 결과는 아쉬움을 자아내기도 하였다. 따라서 한·베 문화적 요소를 고려한 대안 번역을 제시하였다. 앞으로 다양한 층위에서 한·베 문화소 번역 전략 연구를 기대해 본다.

The purpose of this study is to accurately translate cultural elements thatappear in Korean-Vietnamese subtitle translations. The movie ‘Parasite,’ whichexplores the disparity between the rich and poor in modern society, resonated withVietnamese viewers. When translating cultural elements in the film, a lack ofunderstanding of Vietnamese culture can cause a sense of alienation amongVietnamese viewers. Moreover, research on Korean-Vietnamese translationstrategies is less developed compared to those for Chinese, Japanese, andEnglish-speaking countries. This study categorizes cultural elements into four types:proper nouns, vocabulary related to specific cultures, vocabulary related to specificevents or people, and idioms. A total of 71 cultural elements were extracted,and translation strategies were analyzed through representative examples for eachcategory. Given the shared Confucian cultural backgrounds of Korea andVietnam, the replacement of culturally specific elements with general expressionswas found to be unsatisfactory. Therefore, this study proposes alternativetranslations that consider both Korean and Vietnamese cultural contexts. We hopethat future research will further explore translation strategies for Korean-Vietnamesecultural elements at various levels.
