아버지 찾기와 주체화 과정 - 김원일 「어둠의 혼」과 임철우 「아버지의 땅」을 중심으로

The process of finding a father and becoming a subject : An analysis of Kim Won-il’s “The Soul of Darkness” and Lim Cheol-woo’s “The Land of the Father”

본고는 김원일의 「어둠의 혼」과 임철우의 「아버지의 땅」의 ‘아버지 찾기 여정’을통해 단절된 아버지/아들의 관계가 화해의 가능성으로 변하는 지점을 짚어내고자 한다. 이는 아버지를 재구축하여 아들 ‘나’와 별개의 존재로 아버지를 이해하는 화해를의미한다. 이때의 화해는 관계가 파편화된 세계에서 요구되는 가족의 회복을 꿈꾸는소망이다. 이에 「어둠의 혼」은 전쟁 체험 세대인 아들의 기억을 회상하는 과정을 통해가족으로서의 아버지를 이해함으로써 관계를 재구성하며, 본질적인 관계를 회복하여 ‘나’의 주체 회복을 가능성의 차원에서 드러낸다. 반면 「아버지의 땅」은 전쟁 미체험 세대인 아들을 중심으로 ‘나’의 기억과 회상 없이 뒤틀린 가족관계를 회복할 수 있는 가능성을 보여준다. 이처럼 「어둠의 혼」과 「아버지의 땅」을 통해 각각 다른 방식을통해 아버지 찾기 여정을 떠나며, 독립적인 존재로서의 ‘나’로 거듭날 수 있는 가능성을 제시하고 있다. 이는 분단이라는 역사적 상황에 대응하는 윤리적 삶의 태도를 드러낸다.

This paper attempts to examine the possibility of reconciliation in estranged fa ther-son relationships through the “Father Search Journey” in Kim Won-il’s “The Soul of Darkness” and Lim Cheol-woo’s “The Land of the Father.” Here, reconcil iation refers to understanding the father as a being separate from the son “I”; it is a dream of the recovery of the family in a world where the father-son relationship has become fragmented. Accordingly, “The Soul of Darkness” reconstructs this essential relationship by understanding the father as a family through the process of recalling the memories of his son, who belongs to a generation that has expe rienced war, and restores the relationship to reveal the possibility of the recovery of the subject “I.” In contrast, “The Land of the Father” indicates the possibility of recovering twisted family relationships without remembering and recalling the memory of “I,” centering on a son who has not experienced war. Thus, both works present the possibility of being reborn as an independent being (“I”) and embarking on a journey to find the father in different ways. This consequently reveals attitudes toward an ethical life in response to the historical division of the Korean peninsula.
