The ultimate purpose of general industrial complex development is economic growth through job creation in the region. This study aims to analyze characteristics of the relationship between the development of general industrial complexes and the economic growth of the region. We conducted a cluster analysis using a self-organizing map(SOM) technique to analyze the relationship between the sales velocity of 72 general industrial complexes nationwide and the increase in the number of businesses, the number of workers, the gross regional domestic product, and the index of land price fluctuations, which are economic indicators of the region. The results show that if industrial complexes are located in a large city, the economic growth rate in the region is very high if the sale velocity is fast, and even if slow, the increase in economic indicators is high. On the other hand, if located outside a large city, the regional economic growth rate is above average if they are in the capital area, but if in a province, the sale rate and the growth of economic indicators is very low. In addition, medium and large scale businesses favored by young people also show a large increase only when industrial complexes are developed in the capital area and large cities. We believe that this study will help establish effective policies by suggesting conditions for achieving regional economic growth through industrial complex development.
