‘느릐다’, ‘늦다’, ‘더듸다’의 의미 변화 연구

A Study on the Semantic Change of ‘Neuruida’, ‘Neutda’, and ‘Deoduida’

본고는 중세 및 근대 국어 문헌에 나타나는 ‘느릐다’와 ‘늦다’, ‘더듸다’의 용례를 면밀히 고찰하여 그 세부적인 의미를 분석하고, 『표준국어대사전』과 『고려대 한국어대사전』에 나타나는 세 어휘의 뜻풀이를 비교하여 그 유의 관계 및 의미 변화 양상을 밝히고자 한다. 현대 국어사전에서 ‘느리다’는 대체로 다른 두 어휘보다 다의적인 의미를 가지며 ‘더디다’는 매우 단순한 의미를 갖는 어휘로 제시되어 있고, ‘늦다’는 두 어휘와는 달리 형용사뿐 아니라 동사적 용법도 함께 갖는 특징을 보인다. 그러나 중세 및 근대 국어 자료에서는 ‘늦다’가 가장 다의적 의미를 가졌으며, ‘더듸다’ 역시 좀 더 다양한 의미를 갖는 어휘로 두 어휘 모두 형용사 외에 동사적 용법으로도 쓰였다. 그리고 ‘늦다’와 ‘더듸다’는 중세 국어에서부터 그 의미가 부분적으로 중첩되는 유의 관계를 형성한 것으로 보이나, ‘느릐다’는 18세기 중반의 문헌에서부터 확인된다. 그런데 ‘느릐다’가 생성된 이후에는 세 어휘가 유의 경쟁 관계에 놓이면서, ‘더듸다’는 그 의미와 용법이 축소되었고 현대 국어에 와서는 ‘느리다’의 의미 영역에 완전히 내포되는 변화를 겪은 것으로 파악된다. 그리고 ‘늦다’ 역시 그 의미와 용법이 축소되었지만, ‘늦다’는 ‘기준이 되는 때보다 지나거나 알맞은 때를 지나 있다.’는 의미에서 ‘느리다’와 차별적인 의미를 유지하면서 중첩의 유의 관계를 유지하고 있는 것으로 파악된다.

This paper examined usage examples of ‘느릐다’(neuruida), ‘늦다’(neutda), and ‘더듸다’(deoduida) appearing in Middle Korean and Early Modern Korean texts and analyzed their nuanced meanings. It also compared the definitions of these three words as presented in the 『Standard Korean Dictionary』 and the 『Koryo University Korean Dictionary』, and revealed their synonymous relationships and patterns of semantic change. Modern Korean dictionaries indicate that ‘느리다’(neurida) is more polysemous than the other two words, while ‘더디다'(deodida) is characterized by its simplicity. In contrast, 'neutda' stands out for its dual nature as both an adjective and a verb. However, in Middle and Early Modern Korean sources, 'neutda' exhibited a higher degree of polysemy, and 'deoduida' also encompassed a broader semantic range, with both words serving not only as adjectives but also as verbs. Prior to the appearance of 'neurida' in the mid-18th century, 'neutda' and 'deoduida' shared a partial synonymous relationship, showing overlapping meanings. However, following the emergence of 'neurida', the semantic scope of 'deodida' became more circumscribed, resulting in its complete absorption within the semantic field of 'neurida' in modern Korean. Although the semantic and syntactic range of 'neutda' has also contracted, it retains a distinct meaning from 'neurida', thereby preserving the partial synonymous relationship between them.
