한국어 번역사에 대한 시점(始點) 연구 - 사회 조직이론의 시점(視點)을 통한 시점(時點)의 논의

A Study on the Starting Point of Korean Translation History : Under the Perspective of Social Organization Theory

이 연구는 한국어 번역사에 지금까지의 논의는 한국어학이나 한국어사의 연구 방법론을 중심으로 진행되어 왔다. 따라서 '누가(who)', '언제(when)', '어디서(where)', '무엇을(what)'에 초점을 맞추어 역서의 해제(explanation)를 중심으로 논의되어 왔다. 그러나 이러한 논의에서는 '어떻게(how)', '왜(why)' 번역이 필요하게 되었는지에 대한 이유와 원인에 해당하는 사회적, 공시적 환경 분석은 논의의 중심에서 벗어나 있었다. 본 연구에서는 사회 조직이론의 관점에서 한국어의 번역사를 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해 한국의 역사에서 번역과 관련된 시점을 찾아 설명하고자 한다. 고려 왕조에 이르러 '원 간섭기'가 본격화하게 되면서, 고려는 원나라와의 통역과 번역 문제를 해결해야 할 필요성을 인식하게 되었다. 이에 따라 고려는 사회적 통번역 시스템의 개선을 가장 먼저 고려하였다. 이는 통번역의 문제를 사회적 이슈로 간주하여 조직 내에서 해결책을 찾는 처리(process) 과정에 대한 사회적 움직임으로 설명할 수 있다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 ‘통문관’이라는 기관이 설립되었으며, 통번역 관련 기관이 발전하는 과정에서 조선시대까지 사회 조직이론의 출력(output)에 해당하는 '사역원'이라는 기관이 유지되었다. 이 조직은 고려 이후, 조선에 이르기까지 공적인 통번역 기능을 보다 체계적이고 효율적으로 관리하는 조직이 되었다. 이와 같이, 본 연구에서는 사회적 조직이론의 관점에서 한국어 번역의 역사를 바라볼 때, 언어의 상호작용이 사회적인 관점에서 어떻게 이루어졌는지를 살펴볼 수 있었다. 이를 통해 한국어 번역사가 발전해 온 역사를 더욱 정확하게 이해할 수 있다.

This study reexamines Korean translation history through the viewpoint of social organization theory, departing from conventional methodologies focused on Korean linguistics. It emphasizes the importance of understanding the social reasons behind translation during key historical moments, notably the “Yuan interference period” in the Goryeo dynasty. This era was pivotal for initiating significant improvements in translation and interpretation systems with Yuan China, leading to the establishment of institutions like ‘Tongmun-gwan’ and ‘Sayeokwon.’ These developments, reflecting the principles of social organization theory, were instrumental in systematically managing public translation tasks, thereby providing a deeper insight into the evolution of Korean translation from a societal perspective.
