외국인이 편찬한 초기 한국어 교재의 한자어 교수 자료 연구

A Study on Chinese Characters in Early Korean Textbooks Compiled by Foreigners

본고의 목적은 외국인이 편찬한 초기 한국어 교재의 한자어 교수 자료 를 연구하는 데 있다. 초기 한국어 교재의 편찬자는 대부분 외국인이 었다. 특히 한자 문화권인 일본인 저자들과 비한자 문화권의 서양인 저자들은 한국어의 한자를 교수 자료로 취급할 때 동일한 교수 내용과 방법을 사용하지 않았을 것이다. 본 연구에서는 우선 한자에 대한 초 기 한국어 교재 편찬자들의 인식을 그들의 논문, 일기, 교재 서문 등을 통해 확인했다. 또한 교재를 실제 분석하여 한자의 쓰임을 파악했다. 연구 결과, 서양인 저자들은 한국 한자의 존재를 인식하고 있음을 확 인하였다. 그러나 별도의 교육적 처치를 통해 한자를 교육하려는 경향 은 나타나지 않았다. 반면 일본인 저자들은 적극적으로 한자를 교육하 려는 경향이 나타났다. 일본어와의 대조, 한자를 독립적인 장으로 설 정하는 등이 그 예이다. 또한 서양인과 일본인 저자 양쪽에서 모두 한 국 한자어와 관련된 언어문화를 소개하고 있다. 초기 한국어 교재의 집필자들은 외국인으로서 한국 한자어에 흥미를 충분히 가지고 있었 음을 살필 수 있었다.

The purpose of this article is to study data regarding Chinese characters in early Korean textbooks compiled by foreigners. Most of the Korean textbook compilers were foreigners. In particular, the Japanese authors of the Chinese character culture and the Western authors of the non–Chinese characters culture would not have used the same teaching methods when treating Korean Chinese characters as teaching materials. First, we recognized the early Korean Language textbook compilers’ recognition of Chinese characters through their papers, diaries, and textbook prefaces. Moreover, we analyzed the textbooks and their usage of Chinese characters. Western authors were aware of the existence of Korean characters. However, there they showed no tendency to educate their readers about Chinese characters through separate educational measures. Japanese authors, on the other hand, actively tried to educate their readers about Chinese characters. In contrast with The Japanese, The Western authors set Chinese characters as independent fields, and so on. Both Western and Japanese authors introduced language culture related to Korean characters. Based on the viewpoint of foreigners, We found that they were introducing enough interesting information through Chinese characters.
