결혼이민자 대상 한국어 교재의 부부간 담화 속 성차별적 요소 분석 - 『결혼이민자와 함께하는 한국어』를 중심으로

Analysis of Elements of Gender Discrimination within Couples' Discourses Contained in Korean Textbooks for Married Immigrants : Focusing on 「Korean with Married Immigrants」

이 논문에서는 『결혼이민자와 함께하는 한국어』 교재의 담화에서 나타난 성차별적 요소를 부부간 대화를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 담화 분석은 동의의 격률·공감의 격률, 헤지 표현, 공정한 조건에서의 소통 이론을 바탕으로 수행하였다. 이 연구의 논의를 요약하면 다음과 같다: 첫째, 『결혼이민자와 함께하는 한국어』의 부부간 담화에서 남편은 동의의 격률·공감의 격률을 위배하는 화행을 자주 하는 것으로 나타났다. 상호 정중함이 나타나지 않는 대화로 부부가 동등하지 않은 관계임을 나타낸다. 둘째, 『결혼이민자와 함께하는 한국어』의 부부간 담화에서 아내는 헤지 표현을 많이 하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 언행의 선언적 힘을 약화하는 기제가 된다. 결혼이주여성이 헤지 표현을 많이 사용한다는 것은 여성이 결정 주체의 기능을 하지 못하고 사회적 약자의 위치에 있다는 것을 드러낸다. 셋째, 『결혼이민자와 함께하는 한국어』의 부부간 담화에서 부부는 공정한 조건에서 소통하지 않고, 남편이 우월적 지위에서 소통하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 동등함을 전제해야 하는 부부 사이에서도 남성 상위-여성 하위의 관계가 실현되고 있음을 보여준다. 이러한 남녀 간의 비동등성을 나타내는 담화는 학습자인 결혼이민자에게 한국 사회가 성별 간 동등하지 않음을 나타내거나 성별 간 비동등성을 주입하는 기제로 사용될 수 있어 필히 개선되어야 할 것이다.

This study focuses on elements of gender discrimination within couples’ discourses contained in the Korean textbook Korean with Married Immigrants. The analysis was performed using communication theories such as the “agreement and sympathy maxims,” “hedge expressions,” and “communication under fair conditions.” The study’s main arguments are as follows. First, the husband often violates the agreement and sympathy maxims when talking to his wife. His rudeness indicates that the couples are not equals. Second, the wife often uses hedge expressions, weakening the declarative power of her speech acts. Frequent use of hedge expressions by married immigrant women indicates that they are not a part of the decision-making process in their marriages and occupy a lower or weaker social status. Third, the couples do not communicate under fair terms; the husbands occupy the higher status. Although a marriage must be between equals, the dialogues in the textbook indicate that a man occupies a higher status than a woman in a marriage. These arguments point to the importance of revising these dialogues soon, as such unequal conversations between men and women may be taken by married immigrant women readers to mean that Korean society does not promote gender equality. Worse yet, these conversations may even function as a mechanism for spreading gender inequality.
