“Reading English Essay through AI”: A Case Study of Using ChatGPT in a Course for English Majors

Based on the question-answer teaching method in teaching and learning English reading, this study aims to propose a new relational model between users and ChatGPT as a practical and symbiotic method of utilizing AI. In the dialogues presented in this paper, between me (instructor) and ChatGPT (virtual student), and between students (mentors) and ChatGPT (mentee), I position ChatGPT as both the object of being instructed and the agent of learning. This approach seeks to move away from the traditional perspective of viewing AI as a competitor or a substitute for human intellectual labor, which focuses on results―what AI can do for us. Furthermore, the goal is to shift the perspective of students, as users of ChatGPT, from passive, uncritical recipients of the information and answers provided by AI, to proactive learners and practitioners with three interconnected specialized roles: questioners, conversationalists, and future AI prompt engineers.
