Teaching English Literature with Generative Image AI: Movie Poster Creation as a Multimodal Literacy Activity

This article explores the integration of AI image generators in English literature education, focusing on “The Creation of Film Poster with AI” project implemented in a college-level “English Novels and Films” course. While AI’s role in education has garnered attention, its effectiveness in English literature pedagogy remains relatively understudied. This research demonstrates how generative image AI can enhance preservice teachers’ multimodal literacy skills and motivate them to incorporate AI skills in their future teaching practices. During the project, students worked collaboratively to analyze texts, design images, and create film posters. Results indicate that the creation of film posters with AI fosters students’ active engagement with texts, critical thinking, and the development of digital and multimodal literacy skills with knowledge of AI’s capabilities and limitations. Hence, this article contributes to the ongoing discourse on AI integration in English education, particularly in literature; my research underscores the importance of guiding students to critically understand AI’s potentials, developing their multimodal literacy alongside traditional literary analysis skills.
