Obesity causes various physical diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular diseases, and gastrointestinal diseases. Obesity can also cause depression, anxiety, and various mental health problems. Thus, obesity negatively affects physical and mental health and lowers the quality of human life. Nevertheless, obese patients cannot control their food intake. They consume exces-sively. Many characteristics of obese patients are quite similar to those of other addiction diseases. Among various factors, the pleasure center is known to affect appetite. This area is located in the ventral tegmental area of the brain. It is a reward system mediated by dopa- mine. Food and the behavior of consuming food are also controlled by this pleasure center. To effectively treat obesity, cognitive behav-ioral therapy can be applied. Cognitive behavioral therapy is already being used for various addictions. It is known to be effective in maintaining long-term abstinence. Obesity and addiction diseases have similar characteristics. Thus, cognitive behavioral therapy for treating addictions can also be effective in treating obesity.
