明皐 徐瀅修 ‘二南’ 說詩의 특징과 의미 - 『詩故辨』 <周南>·<召南>의 按說을 중심으로

Characteristics and Meanings of 明皐 徐瀅修's Commentary on the ‘二南’ Poems in the Shijing: Focusing on the 按說 in the <周南>·<召南> of 『詩故辨』

본 논문은 조선후기의 관리이자 학자였던 명고 서형수가 주장한 시경설의 특징과 그 의미를 살펴보고자 작성한 것이다. 본고의 논의를 통해 명고의 說詩는 古注와 新注를 취사선택하는 ‘漢·宋兼採’의 성향이 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 그가 참고한 주석들 또한 漢·唐과 宋·明·淸을 아우르는 넓은 범위임을 확인하였는데, 그것이 가능했던 이유는 역시 『詩經傳說彙纂』의 도움에 힘입은 것이라 할 수 있다. 다만 그렇다고 해서 『彙纂』에 인용된 諸家의 설들을 답습하거나, 『휘찬』에 수록된 왕홍서의 설을 그대로 수용한 것은 아니다. 본고에서 살펴본 명고의 按說들을 봤을 때, 여러 자료를 참고하면서도 그러한 자료들에 대한 나름의 변별과 함께 그 중심에는 명고 본인의 판단이 있었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 명고의 시경설은 일종의 ‘독립파’로서 정의내릴 수 있을 듯하며, 『시고변』의 안설은 이러한 자유로운 기풍 속에서 지어진 것임을 알 수 있다. 향후 <周南>·<召南> 외에 나머지 편장의 안설들에 대한 분석이 진행된다면, 명고의 시경설이 가진 특징이 더욱 상세히 드러날 것으로 예상된다.

This paper aims to examine the characteristics and meanings of 明皐 徐瀅修's Commentary on the ‘二南’ Poems in the Shijing(詩經). 徐瀅修 is an official and scholar of the late Joseŏn Dynasty. Through this examination, we can see that 明皐's commentary tends to be a ‘Han-Song compilation’ that does not lean towards either the old or the new commentaries, and the commentaries he references are broad in scope, covering the Han(漢), Tang(唐), Song(宋), Ming(明), and Qing(淸) periods, which was made possible with the help of 『欽定詩經傳說彙纂』. This does not mean, however, that the various theories cited in 『彙纂』 were copied, or that the theories of Wang Hongxu(王鴻緖) in the 『彙纂』, were adopted. The theories we have examined in this article show that 明皐's theories refer to a variety of sources, but they also make their own distinctions, and at the center of them is 明皐's own judgment. 明皐's theory of the Shijing can be defined as a kind of ‘independent school’, and the composition of the 『詩故辨』 was written in this free spirit. Further analyses of the other chapters besides <周南> and <召南> are expected to reveal more details about the characteristics of 明皐's theory of the Shijing.
