서사시 『악마』는 소년 시절에 구상하여 10년 동안 개작을 거듭한, 시인 레르몬토프의 평생의 역작이다. 원고의 개작이 거듭되면서 주인공 악마의 형상도 여러 차례 변모하였고, 최종적으로 그것은 서로 모순되어 보이는 인간적인 특성과 사탄의 정체성을 함께 지니게 되었다. 『악마』의 주인공은 사악하고 잔혹하며 간교한 영혼, 그리스도교적 사탄의 면모를 갖추고 있음이 분명하지만, 다른 한편, 독자들의 동정심을 자극하고, 그들을 매혹시키는 비상한 아름다움과 매력을 보유하고 있다. 악마 형상의 지배소라고 할 수 있는 ‘슬픔’과 ‘추방’의 모티프를 통해서 악마의 인간적인 면, 특히 감정이 발현된다. 한편 우주적인 규모의 운신과 초월적인 권능에 의해서 타락 천사-사탄으로서의 정체성이 강조된다. 천국에서 추방된 악마는 고향-천상에 대한 그리움과 고독, 권태로 괴로워한다. 그는 그루지야 처녀 타마라와의 사랑을 통한 갱생을 시도하지만, 악의 창조자, 죽음의 화신으로서의 숙명으로 인하여 그의 소망은 좌절된다. 그는 타마라의 사랑을 얻어내자마자 파괴자의 본성에 의해 의도치 않게 그녀를 죽이고 만다. 희망도 사랑도 없이 홀로 남는 악마의 결말은 그리스도교의 교리에 합당하지만, 미학적이고 정서적인 차원에서는 깊은 비극적 울림을 남긴다. 레르몬토프를 평생토록 놓아주지 않았던 악마의 형상은 자신의 창조자인 시인과 닮아있다. 천상에서 추방되어 카프카즈에서 배회하는 악마의 모습에는 카프카즈와 얽혀있는 레르몬토프의 전기적, 문학적 삶이 투영되어 있으며, 그가 구사하는 언어는 시인의 언어와 닮았다. 인간적이면서 초월적인 아름다움의 보유자인 악마의 아름다움은 무엇보다도 그가 쏟아내는 말의 아름다움이다. 사악하고 간교하지만, 너무나 인간적이고 아름다운 그의 모습에서 독자들은 러시아 고유의 악마 형상을 접할 수 있다.

The Demon is the masterpiece of the poet Lermontov’s life, conceived as a boy and reworked over a period of 10 years. As the manuscript was repeatedly revised, the image of the main character, the Demon, was transformed several times, and ultimately it came to have both human characteristics and a satanic identity. The hero of The Demon is clearly an evil, cruel, and cunning soul, the Christian Satan, but on the other hand, he possesses an extraordinary beauty and charm that stimulates the readers’ sympathy and fascinates them. The motifs of ‘sorrow’ and ‘exile’, which can be said to be the dominant of the Demon’s image are related to the human side of the Demon. He expelled from heaven, suffers from longing for his home, loneliness, and boredom. He attempts to be rehabilitated through love with the Georgian girl Tamara, but his wish is thwarted by his fate as the creator of evil and the incarnation of death. As soon as he wins Tamara’s love, he unintentionally kills her due to his own destroyer’s nature. The tragic ending of the Demon being left alone without hope or love is consistent with Christian doctrine, but on the other hand, leaves a deep resonance on aesthetic and emotional level. The image of the Demon resembles its creator. Lermontov’s biographical and literary life, which is intertwined with Caucasus, is reflected in the figure of the Demon who has been expelled from heaven and wanders in Caucasus. The language the Demon speaks resembles the words of a poet. The Demon is the possessor of beauty that is both human and transcendent, and his beauty is, above all, the beauty of the words he speaks.
