Climate Crisis and the Return of the Peripheries: What Rise Out of the Cracks When the Sky Falls

이 논문에서 나는 기후위기를 둘러싸고 일어나고 있는 거대한 변화의 조짐을 살피고, 관성에서 벗어난 상상력을 바탕으로 기후위기 시대에 우리에게 필요한 이야기를 만들어보려 한다. 사람들은 기후변화의 심각성을 체감하지만, 그로 인한 대변동을 제대로 상상하기 어려운 상황이다. 이 글에서 나는 기후위기를 단순한 재앙으로 보지 않고, 새로운 변화의 출발점으로 삼아야 한다고 주장한다. 이를 위해 기후위기 시대에 세상의 탈바꿈을 상상/감지하는 노력을 기울이는 한편, 기후위기에 직면해서 생겨나는 ‘붕괴의 감각’이 어떤 방향으로 새로운 현상을 만들어낼 수 있는지 몇 가지 사례를 통해 가늠해보려 한다. II장에서는 기후변화가 평범한 한국인의 삶 속에서 어떤 감각을 만들어내고 있는지 최근의 조사 결과를 중심으로 살펴본다. 한국에서는 기후위기를 심각하게 인식하는 가운데 기후불안을 느끼는 비율이 높게 나타난다, 파멸을 목전에 두고 살아간다는 막연한 느낌 속에서 무력감 역시 팽배해 있다. 그러나 나는 기후불안이 반드시 무력감이나 회피적 대응방식으로 이어지는 것은 아니며, 오히려 기후 불안은 구체적 행동을 촉진할 수 있다고 제안한다. III장에서는 인류세와 기후위기 시대의 엄청난 규모의 붕괴의 감각을 ‘하늘이 무너지는 느낌’에 비추어 고찰한다. 특히 아마존 지역의 야노마미족의 이야기에 비추어 ‘하늘이 무너진다는 것’의 중의적 의미를 생각해보고, 기후위기 시대에 우리에게는 두 가지 의미에서 ‘붕괴의 감각’이 필요하다고 주장한다. 첫째는 기후 위기가 대파국을 불러올 수 있다는 의미의 ‘붕괴’이며, 둘째는 기후위기를 만들어낸 질서와 권위, 상식이 무너진다는 의미의 ‘붕괴’이다. IV장에서는 인간의 영향으로 하늘(기후)이 무너지고 있을 뿐 아니라 땅이 바뀌고 있다는 점에 주목해서, 인류세의 지층 변화를 중심으로 변화하는 땅의 상황을 살핀다. 그리고 하늘이 무너지고 땅이 바뀌면서 흔들리고 뒤섞이는 불안정한 세계에서 틈새의 공간이 형성되고 있다는 사실에 주의를 기울인다. V장에서는 하늘과 땅이 불안정하게 무너지고 흔들릴 때, ‘인간이 된다는 것’에 대해 주류 사회와는 다른 종류의 감각을 장착한 이들이 ‘틈새’에서 깨어나고 있다는 데 주목한다. 특히 성장주의 사회의 암묵적 규칙을 벗어나 분리, 각자도생, 경쟁이 아니라 연결, 공생, 돌봄의 감각을 지닌 이들이 형성하는 새로운 장(“나우토피아)”의 몇 가지 사례를 아이우통 크레나키가 제안한 ‘숲의 시민성’ 개념과 연관지어 살핀다. VI장에서는 기후위기가 초래하는 붕괴와 종말에 관한 가설들에 귀 기울이면서 도, 지금 여기에서 뒤틀린 관계들을 바로잡기 위해 근본적인 방향 전환을 시도하는 실천의 필요성을 강조한다.

In this paper, I examine the signs of profound changes occurring around the climate crisis and attempt to construct a narrative essential for our times, rooted in an imagination that breaks free from inertia. While people acknowledge the severity of climate change, they often struggle to envision the resulting upheaval. I argue that we should not perceive the climate crisis merely as a disaster but as a starting point for new transformations. To this end, I will try to sense and imagine the world’s metamorphosis in the climate crisis era, and assess how the emerging “sense of collapse” can give rise to new phenomena through various examples. In Chapter II, I examine recent survey findings on how climate change is shaping the ‘sense of climate crisis’ of ordinary South Koreans. The data reveal a high rate of climate anxiety amidst serious recognition of the climate crisis, accompanied by a vague sense of helplessness in the face of impending disaster. However, I propose that climate anxiety does not necessarily lead to passivity or avoidance; instead, it can promote concrete actions. Chapter III explores the sense of collapse experienced during the Anthropocene and the climate crisis, reflecting on the metaphor of “the falling sky.” Particularly, I consider the stories of the Yanomami people in the Amazon to explore the ambiguous meanings of “the falling sky.” I argue that we need a dual understanding of the “sense of collapse” in the climate crisis era: first, the notion that the crisis can lead to catastrophic outcomes, and second, the idea that the established orders, authorities, and common understandings that created the crisis are also crumbling. In Chapter IV, I highlight that not only is the sky (climate) collapsing due to human influence, but the earth is also undergoing significant changes. I focus on the geologic transformations of the Anthropocene and draw attention to the formation of “cracks” within this unstable world, where the sky is collapsing, and the earth is shifting. Chapter V notes that, in this unstable environment where the sky and earth are precariously collapsing, people equipped with a different sense of “being human” are awakening in the cracks. I explore several examples of a new realm-“Nowtopia”-formed by those who reject the implicit rules of growth-oriented society in favor of connection, interdependence, and care, linking them to the concept of “florestania” proposed by Ailton Krenak. In Chapter VI, while acknowledging hypotheses concerning the collapse induced by the climate crisis, I emphasize the necessity of practical efforts aimed at radically redirecting our distorted relationships with the whole wo rld in the here and now.
