Missional Implications of C.A. van Peursen's Three Cultural Development Models : Focusing on the missional situation in Cambodia

선교사가 선교지를 이해할 때 변화하는 문화의 내용을 신중하게 파악하는 것이 중요하다. 그보다 더 중요한 것은 해당 지역이 역동성을 가지고 변화되는 원인을 심층적으로 이해하는 것이다. 심층적인 연구를 위해서는 해당 지역을 분석하는 준거틀이 필요한데, 반 퍼슨의 세 단계 문화 발전 모델은 매우 유용한 해석학적 도구이다. 그는 문화가 발전하는 이면에는 인식론적 사고의 흐름이 있고, 그 결과로써 문화의 기능이 변해가는 과정이 있으며, 또한 단계별 문화 모형은 모두 각각의 역기능들을 가지고 있다고 주장한다. 그는 문화의 발전 단계를 신화적 단계, 존재론적 단계, 그리고 기능적 단계로 구분하여 그 문화의 속성을 밝히고 있다. 특히 각 문화 모델에서 나타나는 역기능들로 인한 악영향들에 대해서 경고했다. 본 논문은 반 퍼슨의 모델을 고찰한 이후에 단계별 이론을 동시대의 캄보디아 종교문화 상황에 접목해 보았다. 캄보디아의 현재 종교문화 상황 속에 함의된 단계별 특징들이 어떠한 형식으로 존재하는지, 그리고 자신들의 전통 종교문화에 대해서 어느 정도의 인식론적 사고 전환이 있었는지 살펴보았다. 특히, 캄보디아인들이 가진 종교문화의 인식론 속에 드러나는 역기능들이 어떻게 그들에게 여전히 영향을 미치고 있는지 살펴보았다. 이러한 세 단계의 고찰을 통해 드러난 진단을 토대로 캄보디아 선교가 극복해야 할 역기능들을 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 단계별로 극복해야 할 이론적 방법을 제시했다. 캄보디아 사회가 여전히 가지고 있는 신화적 사고와 그 역기능인 주술이 캄보디아인들에게 상당한 종교적 의미를 주고 있다. 초기 내한 선교사들이 후기 조선 사회에서 주술이라는 역기능에 대해서 ‘의미 중심적’으로 대처한 것처럼, 선교사들은 캄보디아에서 신화적 사고의 역기능에 대해 의미 중심적 접근이 필요하다고 제안한다.

When missionaries understand the mission field, it is important to carefully understand the changing culture. What is more important is to understand the causes of dynamic change in the region. For in-depth research, a frame of reference for analyzing the region is needed, and Van Persen's three-stage cultural development model is a very useful hermeneutical tool.He argues that behind the development of culture, there is a flow of epistemological thought, and there is a process in which the function of culture changes, and that each stage of cultural model has its own dysfunctions. He divided the development stages of culture into mythological stage, ontological stage, and functional stage, revealed the characteristics of the culture, and especially warned about the adverse effects that caused dysfunction. This paper examines the theoretical background of Van Person's step-by-step model of cultural development and then applies the theory of steps to the current religious situation in Cambodia. We looked into the form in which the characteristics of each stage implied in Cambodia's current religious culture situation exist and the extent to which there has been an epistemological change in thinking about their traditional religious culture. In particular, we looked at how the dysfunctions revealed in the epistemology of Cambodian religious culture still affect them. Based on the diagnosis revealed through these three stages of consideration, the study was concluded by diagnosing the dysfunctions that the mission of the Cambodian church must overcome and suggesting theoretical methods to overcome them. It was revealed that the mythical thinking that Cambodian society still possesses and its dysfunction, witchcraft, have significant religious meaning to Cambodians. Just as the early missionaries to Korea dealt with the dysfunction of witchcraft in late Chosen society in a meaning- centered manner, Cambodians still need a meaning-centered approach to the dysfunction of mythological thinking.
