The character of Geosan branch of Singanwheo in Chungbuk province

Singanwheo(新幹會) was the largest organization of national movement for independence, which consisted of both the nationalism lefts who had worked for national movement in Korea and socialists in 1927. Those days, Cungbuk province was made up of 10 counties but the branches of Singanwheo were established in only 5 provinces. Only Gweosan branch of them sought the direction of activities briskly and actually worked. These specialties can be arranged as follows: Firstly, in the beginning of 1920s, a youth group was organized in Gweosan and it developed custom and knowledge improvement. However the youth group’s activities diminished and were depressed in the middle of 1920s. Secondly, the inflow of socialism and progressive young people resulted in a change of youth group’s activities in Gweosan after the mid of 1920s. The progressive young adults dominated the Gweosan youth group and reorganized the system with their doctrine. They tried to develop activities connected with youths’ activities of country covering Chungbuk and Chungnam province. Therefore, with the declaration of Jeongwoo organization(政友會宣言) which concentrated new interests in Joseon colony and with intention to come true Bockbunism(福本主義) flowed from Japan, they joined the first alliance and were looking for the way. After knowing that Singanwheo was the organization aiming for the independence of Joseon, finally they founded Singanwheo in August, 1927 with the community leaders, who were leading national movement in Geosan. Thirdly, the branch of Geosan was founded as the tendency of an era by Geosan youth group. So its performing was not different from but related to the youth group’s activities. The Geosan branch worked constantly from November, 1927 to 1931 until it closed. Its working was divided into the activities of the branch of Singanwheo, the ones of youth group and those of community movement organization(民族主義左派). Fourthly, as mentioned above, the youth group of Geosan was the organization established by anti-Japan nationalists. However the young adults, who accepted socialism flowed from the mid of 1920s, reformed the youth group with the system of socialism. And then they founded the branch with nationalists, in other words, the thoughts of those who ruled the foundation and the activities of Geosan branch were nationalism or progressive left nationalism. Fifthly, internally, nationalists based on community and progressive youths also didn’t take their places completely. Therefore they couldn’t lead national movement well. Externally, Japanese government suppressed that organization constantly and powerfully. Though Geosan branch presented national movement, it was poor bourgeois’. So the social movement didn’t succeed because of their poor ability and Japanese suppression.
