삼국시대 옥천의 역사적 변천과정과 관산성[古尸山城]

Gwansanseong[Gosisanseong] Fortress and The Historical Transition Process of Okcheon during the Three Kingdoms period in Korea

관산성 전쟁은 가장 널리 알려져 있는 삼국시대의 국제전으로서, 이 전쟁이 발발한 기본적인 이유는 주지하듯이 백제의 한강유역 상실에 따른 반발에 있다. 그런데 신라의 배신으로 한강 하류역을 상실하면서 극에 달한 백제의 분노가 표출된 첫 대상이 옥천이었음은 의미심장하다. 아마도 백제는 앞마당이나 다름없는 논산 지역과 가까운옥천부터 공략하여 자신들의 목덜미에 들이대어 있는 듯한 비수를 먼저 제거하고자 하였던 것으로 생각된다. 관산성 전쟁은 일시적인 것이 아니라 7월부터 시작하여 12월 무렵에 끝난 것으로 보이는데, 개전 초기 관산성을 빼앗고 구타모라새를 축조할 정도로 전황이 백제에 유리하였다. 여창이 축조한 구타모라새는 심천이나 이원면 지역으로 비정될 수 있을 것 같다. 이후 전황이교착상태에 빠지면서 어려움에 처한 여창의 군대를 격려하기 위해 급히 길을 나섰던 성왕이 노상에서 전사하면서, 이 전쟁은 삼국의 향배에 너무나도 큰 영향을 미치게 된다. 성왕의 전사지점인 ‘구천’을 특정하기는 쉽지 않으나 여창의 본진이 관산성 일대로 물러나 있던 까닭에 성왕이 옥천읍과 가까운 지역에서 전사하게 되었던 것은 아닐까생각해 보고 싶다. 직접적인 인과관계를 논하기는 어려우나, 관산성 전쟁 후 불과 10 여년만에 대가야가 멸망한 것이 과연 우연이라고만 할 수 있을까? 혹이 전쟁이 불러온 후폭풍일 가능성은 없을지 검토가 필요할 듯 하다. 한편 관산성 전쟁은 멀리는 660년 백제의 패망과 삼국의 존망을 가른결정적인 전쟁이었으며, 옥천은 그 소용돌이의 한가운데 있는 지역이었다. 삼국의 향배를 가른 관산성 전쟁, 비극적인 성왕의 죽음, 삼국판 DMZ라 해도 좋을 만한 濟羅 국경선 등 옥천 지역은 그 어느 곳보다 풍부한 역사적 서사를 갖고 있는 장소인 것이다.

The Gwansanseong Fortress War is the most widely known international war of the Three Kingdoms period. As is well known, the basic reason for the outbreak of this war is the backlash caused by Baekje's loss of the Han River basin. However, it is significant that Okcheon was the first target of Baekje's anger, which reached its peak after losing the lower reaches of the Han River due to Silla's betrayal. It is thought that Baekje wanted to attack Okcheon, which was close to the Nonsan area, which was almost like a front yard, and first eliminate the dagger that seemed to be sticking at their necks. The Gwansanseong Fortress War was not temporary, it appears to have started in July and ended around December. In the early stages of the war, the situation was favorable to Baekje, to the extent that Gwansanseong Fortress was taken and Guttamorasae was built. It seems that the Guttamorasae built by Yeochang can be assigned to the Shimcheon-myeon or Iwon-myeon area. Afterwards, the war reached a stalemate and King Seong, who had rushed out to encourage Yeochang's army, which was in trouble, was killed on the road, and this war had a huge impact on the future of the three kingdoms. It seems that King Seong was killed in an area close to Okcheon because Yeochang's main camp retreated to the area around Gwansanseong Fortress. Looking at the fact that Gaya was destroyed not long after the Gwansanseong Fortress War, we can guess the aftermath of this war. The Gwansanseong Fortress War not only brought about the destruction of Gaya nearby, but was also a decisive war that decided the fall of Baekje and the survival of the three kingdoms in 660, and Okcheon was an area in the center of that whirlpool. The Okcheon area is a place with a richer historical narrative than any other place, including the Gwansanseong Fortress War that decided the fate of the Three Kingdoms, the tragic death of King Seong, and the border of Jera(Baekje+Shilla), which could be called the Three Kingdoms’ version of the DMZ.
