『이수신편』은 조선후기 실학자인 이재 황윤석이 백과사전 형식으로편찬한 과학서이다. 황윤석은 16세 때인 1744년(영조 20년) 9월부터 4 년 후인 1748년까지 『이수신편』을 편찬하였다. 그러나 『이수신편』을 완성한 시점이 언제인지 정확하게 알 수 없지만, 1768년 이후까지 수정과 보완작업이 이루어지고 있었다. 황윤석이 직접 쓴 친필본 『이수신편』은 4책으로 구성되어 있으며, 현재 국립중앙박물관에서 소장하고있다. 황윤석은 『이수신편』의 내용을 구성하는 과정에서 자기 나름의 편목을 설정하여 『성리대전』의 내용을 대폭 축약하고, 여러 가지의 문헌에서 관련 내용을 뽑아 삽입한 후 간단한 주석과 자신의 견해를 덧붙였다. 특히 황윤석은 『이수신편』을 편집하는 과정에서 중국과 한국의많은 저술을 참고하였다. 『이수신편』의 사료적 가치는 먼저 황윤석의 성리학에 대한 인식과조선시대 국어사와 국문학을 연구하는데 매우 유용한 자료라 할 수있다. 또한 『이수신편』은 우리나라 수학사 연구와 천문, 지리, 역학 등을 연구하는데 소중한 사료적 가치를 가지고 있다.
