A Mode Register Analysis Based on Systemic Functional Linguistics and the Synoptic Gospels’ Construction Process : A Linguistic Analysis of the Eucharist and Its Implications

본 논문은 체계기능언어학(Systemic Functional Linguistics; SFL) 을 기반으로 한 레지스터 분석(Register Analysis; RA) 중 모드(Mode) 분석을 다루는 모델을 소개하며, 이 방법론이 공관복음서 텍스트 연구에 어떤 함의를 갖는지 탐구한다. 이 방법론을 적용한 사례로서, 필자의 박사학위 논문에서 공관복음서의 성찬 본문과 인접 문맥에 대한 분석 결과를 제시한다. 이 연구를 통해 체계기능언어학에기반한 레지스터 모드 분석이 공관복음서 연구 분야 중 특별히 “공관복음서 문제”와 연관되는, 공관복음서 형성 과정 연구에 어떠한 기여를 하는지 드러낸다. 본 논문은 해당 본문의 언어학적 분석을 통해, 공관복음서의 형성 시 예수님의 말씀과 행적에 대한 구전 전승이 최종 텍스트의 구성자(마태, 마가, 누가)에 의해 충실히 보존되었으며, 이 과정에서 구성자의 정체성이 중대한 영향을 미쳤을 것임을 제안한다.

This article presents a model of Mode analysis based on Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and Register Analysis (RA). Its primary objective is to elucidate the ramifications of this methodological approach for the examination of the Synoptic Gospel texts. As a case study applying this methodology, this article presents the analytical findings derived from the author’s doctoral dissertation, which specifically concentrates on the principal text within its immediate contextual surroundings in the Eucharistic texts and its co-texts in the Synoptic Gospels. Through this investigation, this study unveils the significant contributions of Register Mode analysis, rooted in Systemic Functional Linguistics, particularly in the investigation of the formative processes of the Synoptic Gospel texts. This paper posits, through a detailed linguistic analysis of the selected texts, that the oral traditions of Jesus’ words and actions were faithfully preserved by the constructors of the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), and that the the identities of these constructors had a significant impact on the composition of the final texts.
