Objective: This study aims to provide information for preventive and therapeutic activities for positive marital relations by examining the effects of empathy, adult attachment, and self- differentiation. Methods: Data from 314 couples surveyed in 2020 using a structured questionnaire were used for the final analysis. Descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, correlation coefficients, and hierarchical regression were performed using SPSS 21.0. Results: Wives scored higher in em pathy, marital conflict, and dependence on adult attachment, while husbands scored higher in adult attachment anxiety and self-differentiation. The husband's adult attachment anxiety and self-differentiation, as well as the wife's adult attachment anxiety, affected the husband's per ception of marital conflict. The wife's perception of marital conflict was influenced by marriage duration, income satisfaction, family-of-origin discord, anxiety, and self- differentiation, but not by the husband's characteristic variables. Husbands and wives have different perceptions of mar ital conflict, and each partner's characteristics influence the other's perception of marital conflict. Conclusions: The study suggests that preventing and treating marital conflict requires consid ering both partners' psychological characteristics, with a focus on adult attachment and self- differentiation
