Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of grit on academic achievement among adolescents via academic engagement and self-directed learning time. Methods: This study used data from the first year of the first-year middle school panel of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018. The subjects of the study were a total of 2,468 adolescents: 1,335 men and 1,133 women. Results: First, grit was found to have a positive effect on academic engagement. In addition, grit influenced academic achievement through academic engagement, and grit influ enced academic achievement through self-directed learning time. Lastly, grit was found to affect academic achievement through academic engagement and sself-directed learning time. As a result of bootstrapping, grit was found to have a double mediating effect on academic achievement through academic engagement and self-directed learning time. Conclusions: The significance of this study is that it provided basic data for developing effective intervention methods and related programs in educational and counseling settings by verifying the sequential mediation relationship between academic engagement and self-directed learning time, which are mediating variables that explain the significant relationship between adolescent grit and academic achievement.
