The Structural Relationship Between Smartphone Dependence, Grit, and Academic Commitment among Adolescents

Objective: This study examines the relationship between smartphone dependence and academ ic commitment among adolescents and whether grit mediates the relationship. Methods: This study utilized secondary data from the fifth year (2022) of the Korean Child and Youth Panel (KCYPS) 2018 elementary students 4 Cohort report, and the subjects are in the second year of middle school. The methodologies applied include frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, goodness-of-fit test, structural equation model analysis, and mediating ef fect (bootstrapping). Results: The findings indicate that, first, adolescents' smartphone depend ence unaffects their academic commitment. Second, adolescents' grit full mediates the rela tionship between smartphone dependence and academic commitment. Conclusions: The study concludes with practical recommendations aimed at enhancing grit among adolescents with high smartphone dependence to bolster their academic commitment.
