본 논문은 아이 웨이웨이가 도자 작품을 통해 권위주의적 권력에 저항하고 자유를 갈망하는 예술가로서의 태도를 어떻게 표현하는지, 그 방식과 의미를 연구한다. 연구자는 아이 웨이웨이의 중국과 미국에서의 성장 과정이 하나의 내러티브로 이어져 그의 예술 활동에 깊이 반영되었음을 강조하며, 항아리 작업과 도자 설치 작업을 중심으로 저항성의 표현을 검토하였다. 국가로부터 탄압받았던 어린 시절의 기억은 저항 정신을 동력으로 삼는 그의 예술적 정신세계를 형성하였고, 청년시절 미국에서의 다양한 경험은 중국의 문화를 서양 미술의 틀로 담아낼 수 있는 도구를 만들어 주었다. 작품 제작 과정에서 아이 웨이웨이는 중국의 전통 공예 기법을 자신의 작품 제작에 활용하며 전통과 현대, 동양과 서양의 이질적인 문화를 융합하는 과정을 통해 사회의 모순을 상징적으로 표현하였다. 그는 작품의 완결보다는 제작 과정을 중시하며, 이 과정에서 시민 사회와 소통할 수 있는 통로를 만들어 공론의 장을 형성한다. 본 연구는 역사성을 작품 구조의 중심으로 끌어들이고, 그 요소를 해체와 재구성의 방법론으로 만들어내는 현대 도자의 새로운 제작 방식을 확인한다. 그리고 행동주의적 미술 도구로서 아이 웨이웨이의 도자 매체 활용법을 재평가한다.
This study explores how Ai Weiwei expresses his resistance to authoritarian power and his longing for freedom as an artist through his ceramic works. The study emphasizes how Ai Weiwei's upbringing in China and the United States forms a narrative deeply reflected in his artistic activities. It examines the expression of resistance, focusing on his “Vase” works and the ceramic installation <Sunflower Seeds> Memories of being oppressed by the state during his childhood fueled the spirit of resistance that shapes his artistic worldview. His diverse experiences during his youth in the United States provided him with the tools to encapsulate Chinese culture within the framework of Western art. In his creative process, Ai Weiwei employs traditional Chinese craft techniques, integrating the disparate cultures of tradition and modernity, East and West, to symbolically express societal contradictions. The artist prioritizes the creative process over the completion of the work, using this process as a means to engage with civil society and create a public forum for discourse. This study identifies a new approach to contemporary ceramics that draws historical elements into the structure of the work and employs deconstruction and reconstruction as a methodology. It also reexamines Ai Weiwei's use of ceramics as a tool for activist art.
