The Formation and Development of the Chinese Translation Field of Korean Literature through Bourdieu’s Field Theory:Conflicts and Challenges between Heteronomy and Autonomy
This study examines the development of Korean literary translations into Chinese using Bourdieu’s field theory, focusing on the tension between external influences (heteronomy) and internal independence (autonomy). The analysis shows that sponsorship, market demand, and cultural trends have significantly shaped the visibility of Korean literary translations in China. Although some autonomy has emerged through the support of Korean literary organizations, it remains insufficient for the field’s sustainability. As the influence of the Hallyu Wave has waned, the prominence of Korean literature in China has grown. However, greater autonomy is needed to maintain this influence, which can be achieved by fostering translators with symbolic capital and enhancing institutional support. This sociological approach complements traditional analyses by emphasizing the external forces shaping translation practices and literary reception.
