As the management of ginseng farms has become difficult due to the expansion of market opening and rising management costs, it is important to analyze the causes of management inefficiency for improving the competitiveness of ginseng farms. This study measures the production and profit efficiency of ginseng farms using data envelopment analysis (DEA), and analyzes the effect of key management variables on inefficiency using a two-stage methodology and Tobit model. As a result of the efficiency measurement, production efficiency increased but profit efficiency decreased slightly. This means that the gap between leading and ordinary farms has increased in terms of profit efficiency. Thus it is necessary to improve the efficiency of ordinary farms by spreading the management know-how of leading farms and disseminating advanced technologies. The analysis results of inefficiency causes showed that forward contracts (so called Pojeon sales) have a positive effect on production and profit efficiency. However an institutional organization is required to remove the default risk because forward contracts carried default risk. Also the environment-friendly certification has a negative effect on profit efficiency despite the government’s emphasis on it for safe ginseng production. This means efforts to increase an added value of environment-friendly ginseng farms are needed to improve the profit efficiency.
