Analysis of Agricultural Production Efficiency Due to Rice Field Fragmentation Using Endogenous Stochastic Frontier Analysis

The Korean government has simultaneously implemented policies to increase the size of rice paddies and reduce the area of rice paddies in order to respond to the problems faced by Korean rice agriculture both internally and externally. However, a decrease in rice paddy area, combined with the topographical characteristics and agricultural structure, can cause rice field fragmentation. Therefore, using a sample of 1,326 farms, Stochastic Frontier Analysis was estimated to quantify rice field fragmentation using the Simpson index and determine its impact on agricultural productivity. To solve the endogeneity problem of rice field fragmentation, instrumental variables were used, and the results showed that they had a negative impact on inefficiency. This suggests that scaling-up policies should consider a decline in technical efficiency in situations where the ratio of rice paddy area is decreasing and fragmentation persists.
