University students' perceptions on the varieties of English in WE-based classes

This study aims to explore the learners’ perceptions towards the varieties of English in a Korean university context. Unlike previous studies which have mostly used quantitative methods like questionnaires, the present study focuses on journal writing to capture English learners’ voices. Throughout the spring semester of 2023, the researcher offered WE-based lectures with a focus on ELFand WE-related theories, online content, and lessons on the varieties of English. A total of 18 university students participated in the study. As part of the course requirements, they submitted 11 journals to share their perspectives on a WE-based lecture and issues related to World Englishes. Additional data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five participants at the end of the semester. The collected data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. The findings show that a majority of the participants came to recognize the varieties of English and the importance of acquiring knowledge of World Englishes. As the class progressed, their perspectives on the varieties of English changed for the positive. However, because of realistic issues, they still tend to follow native English norms and prefer native speakers’ English in a formal educational context.
