知訥 頓悟漸修論의 本旨 - 返照의 중요성을 중심으로

지눌(知訥)의 돈오점수(頓悟漸修)에 대한 기존 연구는 성철(性徹)의 영향으로 교학(敎學)과 관련 있는 해오(解悟)를 선문(禪門)의 깨달음으로 인정할 수 있는지에 관해 주로 논쟁하였다. 지눌 사상에서 해오는 중요한 개념이지만, 그가 해오점수를 통해서 강조하고자 하는 바는 오히려 증오(證悟)라는 궁극적 경지이고, 증오에 도달하기 위한 반조(返照) 수행의 중요성이다. 돈오점수론의 목표는 자성문정혜(自性門定慧)라는 증오의 경지에 있으며, 수상문정혜(隨相門定慧)의 반복을 통해 자성문정혜(自性門定慧)에 이르는 과정은 점수의 구체적 내용으로서 반조의 공덕을 쌓아 해오에서 증오로 나아가는 것이다. 지눌이 말년에 제시한 간화경절문(看話徑截門)은 해오점수라는 그의 기존 입장과 모순되는 것으로 이해되지만, 간화경절문의 화두참구(話頭參究) 역시 증오-자성문정혜라는 궁극적 경지에 도달하기 위한 반조 수행의 맥락에 있으며, 기존 돈오점수론의 취지와 다르지 않다. 즉 지눌의 돈오점수론은 증오-자성문정혜의 경지에 도달하기 위한 반조 수행으로 일관되며, 이것이 ‘밖에서 찾지 말라’는 지눌의 본지(本旨)이다.

Existing research on Chinul's theory of ‘sudden awakening followed by gradual cultivation[[頓悟漸修]]’ mainly debated whether the enlightenment based on understanding, Jie-Wu[解悟] could be recognized as the Zen thought under the influence of Seongcheol[性徹]. Although Jie-Wu is an important concept in his thoughts, what he wants to emphasize through the ‘Jie-Wu followed by gradual cultivation[解悟漸修]’ is rather the ultimate enlightenment, Zheng-Wu[證悟], and the importance of practicing reflective observation, fanzao[返照] to reach the ultimate enlightenment. His theory on samādhi[禪定] and prajñā[智慧] is a process of reaching Zheng-Wu from Jie-Wu by accumulating fanzhao cultivation. The Ganhwa[看話] practice proposed by Chinul in his later years is understood to contradict to his existing theory, but this is also the result of understanding his thoughts centered on Jie-Wu. The key-concepts(話頭) of the Ganhwa practice is also in the context of the practice of fanzhao to reach the ultimate state of samādhi and prajñā[自性門定慧], and it is not different from the purpose of his existing theory. In other words, Chinul's theory of ‘sudden awakening followed by gradual cultivation’ is consistent with the practice of fanzhao to achieve Zheng-Wu, which is the main idea of his thought. 'Don't look for outside'.
