청동기시대 반달돌칼의 쓰임새 연구 - 경기 고양지역 청동기유적 출토 사례를 중심으로

Research on the use of Semilunar shaped stone knives during the Bronze Age : Focusing on the excavated examples from the Goyang area in Gyeonggi Province

청동기시대 대표적인 농경 도구인 반달돌칼/반월형석도(半月形石刀)은 등과 날의 모양, 날의 수 등에 따라 다양한 형태가 있으며, 시기와 지역에 따라 다양하게 나타나지만, 사용에 있어서는 수확과 관련된 도구로 보고 있다. 본고에서는 현미경 관찰을 통해 도구에 형성된 흔적의 특징을 확인하고 이를 바탕으로 반달돌칼의 사용에 대해 이해하고자 한다. 그리고 필리핀, 인도네시아 등에서의 수확 도구 사용과 관련된 민족지학 연구, 프랑스 및 이탈리아 지역의 신석기시대 유적에서 출토된 수확 도구에대한 연구와 비교를 통해 우리나라 청동기시대 유적에서 출토되는 반달돌칼의 사용 방법과 작업 효율이 높은 도구보다 반달돌칼이 일반적으로 사용되었던 이유에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 농경 사회에서 반달돌칼은 오랫동안 사용되어 온 도구이다. 농경 기술이 발달하지 않은 환경에서 작물 재배는 기후, 환경, 작물의 종류 등에 따라 생장 속도가 일정하지 않기 때문에 수확 시기 또한 달랐을 것이다. 즉, 잘 익은 곡물을 먼저 선별적으로 수확하고, 이후 다시 수확 작업을 반복하는 방식을 추정해 볼 수 있다. 한 번에 다량의 곡물을 수확할 수 있는 낫보다는 잘 익은 곡물만 선택적으로 수확할 수 있는 반달돌칼이 더 용이하게 사용되었을 것으로 볼 수 있다. 이후 작물의 재배 기술과 도구의 제작 기술의 발달 등으로 반달돌칼보다는 낫의 사용 비중이 높아지게 되었을 것이다. 그러나 이번 분석은 경기 고양 지역 청동기시대 유적에서 출토된 반달돌칼을 대상으로 진행했기 때문에 다른 지역에서 확인되는 다양한 형태의 반달돌칼에 대한 쓴자국 분석을 바탕으로 비교 연구가 지속적으로 이루어져야 할 필요가 있다.

The typical Bronze Age agricultural tool, the Semilunar shaped stone knives, has many different forms, depending on the shape of the back and blade, the number of blades, etc. and varies depending on the time period and region, but its use is generally considered to be related to harvesting. In this article, we will analyze the characteristics of the marks on the tool through microscopic observation to understand the use of semilunar shaped stone knives. In this article, I will compare and contrast the use of semilunar shaped knives found in Korean Bronze Age sites with ethnographic studies on the use of harvesting tools in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Neolithic sites in France and Italy to understand how half-moon knives were used and why they were generally used over more efficient tools. In agricultural societies, semilunar shaped knives have been used for a long time. In less technologically advanced environments, crops would have been harvested at different times because their growth rates were not constant, depending on the climate, environment, and type of crop, meaning that ripe grains would be selectively harvested first, and then the harvest would be repeated. This would have been easier to do with a semilunar shaped stone knife, which could selectively harvest only ripe grains, rather than a sickle, which could harvest large quantities of grain at once. Later developments in crop cultivation techniques and tool-making technology may have led to the use of sickles rather than semilunar shaped stone knives. However, since this analysis was conducted on semilunar shaped stone knives excavated from the Goyang Bronze Age site in Gyeonggi Province, comparative studies should continue to be conducted based on the analysis of various types of half-moon stone knives found in other regions.
